The upcoming movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” could significantly alter the established path of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although fans are excited to see the new characters in action, the director has clarified that there won’t be any cameos or Easter eggs in this film.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Matt Shakman expressed his desire for the film to feature a “realistic portrayal of space,” which meant avoiding concepts like wormholes.
He further mentioned that the tech depicted in the movie has a distinct retro-futuristic feel to it. Yet, it doesn’t shy away from featuring booster rockets among other advancements.
Referring to the much-awaited movie as a “blend of Marvel’s excitement and Apollo 11’s historical significance,” Shakman expressed his desire to create a product that had the authentic feel of a 1960s production, “in the style that Stanley Kubrick might have produced it, given the opportunity.
He then went on to state that The Fantastic Four: First Steps has its own universe.
It’s absolutely fantastic and freeing. There aren’t any other superheroes like them in this world. No Easter eggs to find, no unexpected encounters with characters such as Iron Man or others.
Continuing the discussion on the movie, the filmmaker expressed his appreciation for the Marvel Universe’s intricate interconnectivity. Yet, what truly captivated him was having the opportunity to explore something fresh and distinctive.
In other words, it’s been confirmed that the new superhero family will eventually encounter characters who are already part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Matt Shakman emphasized that, in this specific storyline, everything is self-contained and represents their own unique segment within the larger MCU.
During the filming process, Matt Shakman chose to employ vintage lenses, creating a cinematic style reminiscent of the past, and simultaneously decided to incorporate computer-generated imagery (CGI).
This movie under scrutiny features several renowned actors such as Pedro Pascal playing Reed Richards (a.k.a. Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby stepping into the role of Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn portraying Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach taking on the character Ben Grimm (The Thing).
The movie will be released on July 25, 2025.
