Is Kenan Thompson Leaving Saturday Night Live? Comedian Reflects on ‘Forever Cast Member’ Status 22 Seasons In

Kenan Thompson, currently starring on Saturday Night Live, has no immediate intentions of leaving the undisputed top TV job. With his tenure now surpassing that of Darrell Hammond, who held the position for 14 seasons, Thompson is the longest-serving SNL cast member to date.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Thompson shared insights about his prolonged tenure and potential future on SNL, hinting at his great enthusiasm for possibly being a permanent cast member.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I find myself musing about an intriguing scenario: Imagine if I were to remain an indelible part of this captivating production, a constant presence. It’s quite a wild thought, isn’t it? The only other significant landmark I can envision is becoming the eternal cast member… Simply never departing from the show.

Originally aiming for 20 seasons as an unmatched milestone, Thompson now aspires to venture into uncharted territories. Having surpassed that threshold, he casually mentioned that 30 seasons is merely a number, and at this point, he’s simply enjoying the ride, content to stay on until it naturally comes to an end.

Before, no one had reached the age of twenty, but I came very close when I turned seventeen. At that point, I thought if it’s possible, I’d like to stay alive until I turn twenty. And now we find ourselves at age twenty-two, and I’m not sure how that happened,” he concluded.

Thompson’s commitment to SNL has consistently remained strong. His dedication has garnered him five Emmy nominations, with one of them being for the iconic 2018 sketch titled “Come Back, Barack.

Kenan Thompson, known for his role in Kenan & Kel, praised Saturday Night Live as the most wonderful job on television to People magazine. He explained, “SNL is a unique environment that people inside and outside cherish and rely on. When they offer me this incredible opportunity, how can I refuse the best job available? It’s simply out of love for the place. Having such consistent employment feels like a true blessing.
