Elden Ring Director Miyazaki Reassures Fans That FromSoftware Will Still ‘Actively Develop Single-Player Focused Games’ Despite Online Multiplayer The Duskbloods

Among the notable unveilings during this week’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct was the exclusive announcement of The Duskbloods, a game developed by FromSoftware – the studio known for the Soulsborne series. However, director Hidetaka Miyazaki clarified that this doesn’t indicate a change in the company’s future focus.

In a recent chat with Nintendo, Miyazaki discussed why they chose to create The Duskbloods as a PvPvE game. He expressed his longstanding fascination with this structure because it offers a wide array of design possibilities and allows FromSoftware to utilize their expertise in crafting tough enemy interactions.

In passing, I’d like to clarify one point, Miyazaki stated. Essentially, you should know that our game is primarily an online multiplayer title, but this doesn’t imply that we, as a company, are planning to focus more on multiplayer games in the future with all upcoming titles.

He went on to say: “It was also revealed that the sequel to Elden Ring for the Nintendo Switch is in the works, and we’re committed to producing standalone games that follow our classic, single-player approach.

Following the launch of Elden Ring in February 2022, FromSoftware has ventured into various creative directions. Their DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, introduced innovative scaling techniques using Scadutree Blessings. Moreover, Elden Ring: Nightreign is an upcoming cooperative survival action game that merges traditional Souls-style gameplay with a looming storm, resources, and character stereotypes. Interestingly, the studio has also revisited its mecha roots with Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.

As a dedicated fan, I’m excited to see FromSoftware venturing into new territory with The Duskbloods. In a recent interview, Miyazaki shared that when the team presented The Duskbloods concept to Nintendo, it was quite rudimentary – more like a thread of creative ideas than a polished pitch. This project seems to deviate from any previous endeavors FromSoftware has undertaken, promising an intriguing and fresh gaming experience.

Nintendo had a desire to bring the project into fruition, and initially, a small team began working on it for the original Switch. However, Nintendo proposed transitioning the project to the upcoming Switch 2 to Nintendo’s collaborators at FromSoft. As Miyazaki stated, “The new hardware’s emphasis on online capabilities enabled us to maintain our original vision as closely as possible, which was excellent news for us.

Although The Duskbloods may seem somewhat distinct from typical FromSoftware games, it appears they are not abandoning their traditional style entirely. In other words, give FromSoftware the creative freedom to work on this project.

Could FromSoftware’s next single-player game be something other than Elden Ring 2 or Bloodborne 2? Miyazaki hinted that Elden Ring 2 isn’t currently in the works, but he left a tiny crack open for it in the future. As for Bloodborne 2, it seems fans will have to wait a while longer as FromSoftware hasn’t mentioned anything about it yet.
