Nvidia Says Switch 2 Is 10 Times More Powerful Than the Original Switch

Nintendo has revealed the technical specifications for the upcoming Switch 2, and now Nvidia has provided further information. As per Nvidia’s statements, the upgraded system is expected to boast “a 10-fold increase in graphics performance” compared to the initial Nintendo Switch model.

In an upcoming model, referred to as The Switch 2, Nvidia’s custom processor will power its operation. This innovative chip is equipped with unique attributes specifically designed to enhance the graphical quality of games significantly. In a recent blog post, Nvidia revealed that this new Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) boasts “dedicated RT cores and Tensor Cores for exceptional visual effects and artificial intelligence-based improvements.

Ray tracing processors contribute significantly to generating authentic-looking lighting, mirroring effects, and shadows within video games. As a result, the virtual environments appear more genuine and captivating.

The Tensor Cores are responsible for features such as Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). This technology enhances game resolution, providing a clearer image without compromising performance. Moreover, the Tensor Cores aid in tasks like AI face recognition during video calls and background elimination during live streams, which can be advantageous for social gaming and streaming activities.

Nvidia mentioned that the Switch 2 can offer “high-definition gaming with resolutions up to 4K when docked and a smooth 120 frames per second at 1080p while in handheld mode.” Additionally, it features High Dynamic Range (HDR) and artificial intelligence (AI) upscaling technology, enhancing visual quality and ensuring games run more smoothly.

One standout aspect is the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) functionality, compatible with Nvidia G-Sync in handheld setting. This feature ensures a seamless gaming experience by eliminating screen tearing and providing an ultra-smooth gameplay. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that the upcoming Switch 2 has been designed to optimize power usage effectively.

It’s all quite intriguing, and there’s a lot of curiosity swirling around about how massive titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 will appear and perform on the latest gaming platform.

According to tech specialist Richard Leadbetter, who hails from Digital Foundry, he has offered his initial opinions regarding the specifications of the potential Switch 2 device.

Kicking off the anticipated wave of games, Switch 2 appears to be in the expected ballpark based on its initial showings. I was hoping for a device with Steam Deck-like overall performance during the presentation, but it seems that we might be dealing with something more powerful – especially when docked.

He also added:

It’s clear that ray tracing hardware is integrated within Nintendo’s T239 processor; however, no games have demonstrated this feature. Given the significant impact on performance that Ray Tracing (RT) typically carries, and considering the importance of each GPU cycle in mobile hardware, this isn’t unexpected. For now, it’s only known that both RT and DLSS are supported by Nintendo, but they haven’t provided extensive details about it.

It appears that the Switch 2 is set to offer significant improvements over its predecessor, and enthusiasts can’t wait to witness it once it hits the market.
