In this film, Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood”) and Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) play U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War. Their mission takes an unexpected turn when they stumble upon something chilling in the jungle – dinosaurs!
Under the guidance of Australian director Luke Sparke, the film Primitive War is inspired by Ethan Pettus’ book series. The narrative revolves around a special military unit known as Vulture Squad, dispatched to a secluded jungle in 1968 on a mission to locate a lost platoon of Green Berets. However, what they encounter are not merely human adversaries; rather, they find themselves battling primordial beasts.
Three days past, I misplaced my Green Berets. During that fierce engagement, it seemed there was a peculiar occurrence, says the character portrayed by Piven in the gripping preview. As the team struggles to stay alive, they come to understand they must match the ruthlessness of the beasts pursuing them.
Spark, who was involved in both writing and producing the film, found the outrageous idea intriguing. “Dinosaurs during the Vietnam War? It’s hard not to be enthused!” he exclaimed when introducing the project in 2022. He classifies the movie as a blend of survival-horror, action from the military realm, and terrifying ancient creatures.
The lineup features Tricia Helfer from Battlestar Galactica, Nick Wechsler known for Revenge, and Vietnamese talent Ana Thu Nguyen. Spark, who has previously directed Occupation: Rainfall – a sci-fi film centered around human versus alien warfare – carries over the same high-octane action to Primitive War.
The “Primitive War” book collection currently boasts two follow-ups, and a third installment is imminent. Should the film adaptation prove successful, eager viewers could look forward to additional dino conflicts in potential sequels.
