In an animated series like Pokémon, it’s the voice actors who give life to the characters, especially when they sing. And there’s no doubt that one of the most cherished animated series ever made is none other than Pokémon. When you think of Pokémon, Ash and Pikachu are likely the first ones that come to mind, but Team Rocket isn’t far behind. Characters like Jesse, James, and Meowth are an integral part of what makes Pokémon special. Their memorable theme song and amusing, somewhat villainous behavior turned Pokémon into the show we all know and love. Tragically, James Carter Cathcart, the voice actor who gave life to James, Meowth, Gary, and Professor Oak, passed away at the age of 71. In honor of his memory, we’re repeating the Team Rocket motto in our hearts.

This week, James Carter Cathcart passed away following a prolonged struggle against throat cancer. Prior to his retirement in the year 2023 due to his diagnosis, he played significant roles in the popular series Pokémon, appearing from its debut episode up until Season 25. In his career spanning over 700 episodes of the show, James Carter Cathcart lent his voice to beloved characters such as Meowth, James, and Professor Oak. Additionally, he voiced more than fifteen Pokémon films, including the classic masterpiece Pokémon: The First Movie, released in 1998.

Apart from Pokémon, Cathcart additionally starred in various other animated shows like Yu-Gi-Oh! and One Piece. However, his enduring legacy will always be associated with Pokémon. Characters such as James and Meowth, who are undeniably among the series’ most intriguing figures, were brought to life by none other than James Carter Cathcart, through his skillful portrayal. And let’s face it, many of us had a secret crush on Gary at some point!

The passing of James Carter Cathcart is deeply regretted by Pokemon enthusiasts. However, one can almost sense a chorus of “Indeed!” reverberating through the night sky.
