At the 2020 DC FanDome event (do you recall?), it was revealed that a movie based on the electric-powered African American teen superhero, Static Shock, would be produced by Michael B. Jordan. However, since then, DC has undergone various changes and is now known as DC Studios, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Despite numerous project announcements made after the studio’s formation, there was no mention of Static Shock among them. Recently, during his press interviews for Superman, Gunn was asked about the status of the Static Shock movie, but unfortunately, he did not provide positive news.
He shared details on Collider about the current status of Static Shock and its upcoming movie, as reported by Pay or Wait.
At the moment, there’s no new information about Static Shock. The situation surrounding this character is quite intricate at the moment, which unfortunately means I can’t share any positive updates with you regarding Static Shock.
It appears that Static Shock faces significant legal hurdles due to its origins with Milestone Comics, a comics imprint created by notable African American creators in 1993. Other titles under this label included Icon and Hardware. Despite initial success, the mid-90s comic book market downturn led to declining sales and the closure of many comic shops, affecting Milestone as well. This seems to be the primary reason why Static Shock hasn’t been able to secure movie or show adaptations as easily as other DC properties.
Over time, Milestone Comics stopped publishing their comic book series and granted licenses for their characters to DC, who initially published them back in 1993. However, Milestone still maintains ownership of the intellectual property. In 2000, Static Shock became the main character in his own animated show, reaching millions of children. He also made appearances in Justice League Unlimited, with Dwayne McDuffie, one of his co-creators, working as a writer and producer on that series. Tragically, McDuffie passed away in 2011. Since then, Milestone has allowed DC to use their characters, integrating them into the larger DC Universe. This led to Static Shock joining the Teen Titans, and other Milestone heroes appearing in Young Justice.
In essence, the legal complexities stem from a dispute following McDuffie’s death. His creators, Denys Cowan, Reginald Hudlin, and Derek Dingle, announced a major relaunch of Milestone Media. However, McDuffie’s widow, Charlotte Fullerton, sued the trio for not involving McDuffie’s estate in the new plans. As a consequence, the Static Shock character has been held back as a property. This is the reason behind the halt of the Michael B. Jordan Static Shock movie, suggesting it might be years before we see Static Shock on screen or in a DCU film. It certainly seems like a wasted chance.
