The highly anticipated “Helldivers 2 Control Group Warbond” by developer Arrowhead will launch on both PC and PS5 on July 17, 2025. This time around, the theme is that every newly acquired piece of equipment could be as dangerous to you as it is to your enemies, since all gear is experimental and untested in the field. In essence, you are the test group.
The Warbond presents a fresh main weapon, named VG-70 Variable. This Variable is a seven-barreled volley gun that offers three distinct firing methods. You can opt for continuous firing (Auto), where you can choose from three Rate Per Minute (RPM) settings, simultaneous discharge of all barrels (Volley), and an all-out burst (Total) which expends the entire ammo supply in one powerful explosion. Be warned, using Total mode significantly increases the risk of both your target and yourself being destroyed.
Additionally, there’s the G-31 Arc – a lighter type of grenade that hops about as it releases an electric field surrounding itself. This field strikes anyone unlucky enough to be nearby, regardless if they are friend or foe.
As a devoted enthusiast, I’d like to share my excitement about the PLAS-45 Epoch support weapon. It has the remarkable ability to store energy for a powerful plasma release, concentrating it into a sphere that’s incredibly effective. However, be warned, overcharging this weapon can lead to an unstable plasma sphere, which unfortunately could result in an accidental explosion, posing a risk to the user.
Coming next is the A/LAS-98 Laser Sentry. Instead of traditional ammunition canisters, it now uses a heatsink. This modification theoretically enables this turret to shoot indefinitely. However, in reality, overheating remains a concern and when that occurs, as you might guess, it explodes.
Utilizing technology clandestinely obtained from the Illuminate, the LIFT-182 Warp Pack strategy enables Helldivers to briefly establish a semi-stable rift, enabling short-range teleportation. Keep in mind that these rifts won’t maintain stability for extended periods, and overuse may lead to their collapse, posing potential risks for those within it at the time.
In terms of protective gear, Control Group offers the AD-26 Bleeding Edge (intermediate armor) and AD-49 Apollonian (heavy armor), along with fresh capes and emoticons. Given that field testing equipment is risky business, these armor sets come equipped with the Adreno-Defibrillator. This built-in skill allows a Helldiver to be revived at full health when they fall – but only once per fight. However, upon resuscitation, you’ll gradually lose health again. Clearly, it’s not a flawless system.
Helldivers 2 is set to come to Xbox Series X|S in August 2025.
