Another icon from the world of cinema has departed. Clive Revill, known for both film and stage performances, passed away on March 11th, aged 94, after a prolonged struggle with dementia, in a care facility located in Sherman Oaks.
The shocking news was confirmed by Clive Revill’s daughter Kate Revill, to The Hollywood Reporter.
Previously, Clive Revill starred as a police officer in two films: Otto Preminger’s Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965) and Jack Smight’s Kaleidoscope (1966). Notably, his versatile skills earned him not just one but two roles in the same movie. In Joseph Losey’s Modesty Blaise, Clive Revill portrayed both a Scottish character and an Arab.
In one scene, he was also spotted acting alongside Roddy McDowall. In this movie, the esteemed actor portrayed a scientist probing peculiar occurrences within a spooky mansion known as The Legend of Hell House.
In addition, it was Director Irvin Kershner who reached out to Clive Revill in 1980 to utilize his voice for the role of the Emperor in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.
His voice could be heard when the emperor had a conversation with James Earl Jones’ Darth Vader.
In a 2015 interview, Revill shared an anecdote about engaging his fans with an eerie voice reminiscent of an emperor’s. He would instruct them to shut their eyes and then say, “There is a great disturbance in the Force.” This statement, delivered in a haunting tone, often left his audience pale, and one person nearly passed out.
Instead, Ian McDiarmid, who had previously acted as the Emperor in 1983’s Return of the Jedi and several other movies, replaced the voice on the DVD release of the film in 2004.
Discussing his stage career, Clive Revill – a seasoned member of the Royal Shakespeare Company – took part in seven Broadway productions. He was even nominated for a Tony Award in connection with his roles in two musicals, specifically “Irma la Douce” from 1961 and “Oliver!” in 1963.
