DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Makes a MS. MARVEL Connection

In the series “Daredevil: Born Again”, Matt Murdock, despite being an accomplished fighter and vigilante, finds himself in a common predicament – short on funds. His law firm isn’t bringing in much cash, so like any ordinary person, he seeks a loan. He visits NY Mutual Bank, hoping for approval. This bank visit in the fifth episode sets up an engaging crossover with “Ms. Marvel“, helping Matt’s storyline fit seamlessly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When Matt visits the bank, he encounters Kamala Khan’s father, Yusuf Khan, who serves as its Assistant Manager. This isn’t surprising for those who have watched the series trailers since he appears in at least one of them. Yusuf is reluctant to grant Matt’s company the business and, during their discussion, he receives a call from his daughter. She’s currently enjoying herself in Los Angeles with friends. It’s delightful to know she’s having fun. I particularly appreciate the mug on his desk that reads “World’s Okayest Dad,” despite the fact that he surpasses an ordinary father. Yusuf mentions that he resides in Jersey City, where Kamala is their beloved superhero. It’s amusing that Matt is unaware of Ms. Marvel.

As a passionate cinephile, I find myself departing with a tinge of dissatisfaction but good manners, yet the whispers of Luca’s crew taking over a bank pique my curiosity and compel me to return. Armed, barricaded, and holding several hostages, including the esteemed Yusuf Khan, they aim for the vault, which contains an exceptionally valuable diamond. With the branch manager absent, Yusuf is thrust into the role of opening the vault. Caught unaware, I find myself unwillingly joining the hostages. Leveraging my keen listening abilities, I subtly piece together a strategy.

However, a significant challenge arises because Yusuf falsely claims to know how to open the safe due to his fear. Matt advises him to persist in this deception and stall for time instead. Managing to isolate one of the robbers using an old bathroom ruse, Matt successfully overpowers him. He hastens downstairs in the nick of time to rescue Yusuf, who is visibly frightened and can no longer hide his inability to open the safe. Astonished, Yusuf watches as Matt manages to unlock the vault and retrieve the diamond.

Following some deception, one of the team’s accomplices finds out that the diamond they were carrying is actually a piece of butterscotch candy from Yusuf’s desk, not realizing it. Later on, Matt enters to check on Yusuf, who invites him for dinner in New Jersey. It remains uncertain whether Matt will accept his invitation or if Yusuf has suspicions about Matt being a vigilante, given that his daughter is also actively combating crime. However, what we do know is that he returns the diamond to Yusuf’s butterscotch dish.

In the midst of all the sorrow and gravity in this series, it’s refreshing to have a light-hearted moment, particularly with Kamala Khan’s charming father Yusuf. The combination of Ms. Marvel and Daredevil is intriguing, and it seems that the seeds for a team between Kamala and Kate Bishop, potentially leading to the Young Avengers, have been sown in The Marvels. It’s plausible that these young heroes might join forces with Daredevil at some point, or perhaps we’ll even witness an evening out together, such as a dinner date involving Matt Murdock and Kamala Khan. As always, only the future can reveal the truth.
