Joel and Ellie’s Relationship is About to Get a Whole Lot Worse

In the next season of “The Last of Us,” which is set five years after the events of the first season, there appears to be a strain in the relationship between Joel and Ellie, the show’s beloved father-daughter duo. At the end of season one, it was revealed that Joel had lied to Ellie about her fate, and she seemed to sense something was amiss. As we approach the second season, the cast and creators recently held a press conference to discuss what fans can anticipate after such a dramatic conclusion. Bella Ramsey, who portrays Ellie, made it clear that there will be tension between Joel and Ellie in “The Last of Us” season two, suggesting that they won’t get along for a while. It seems like their bond may face some challenges ahead.

Ramsey elaborated further on the time leap in season two of The Last of Us, stating, “Certainly, there’s no denying that a lot has transpired during those five years. Ellie went from being 14 to 19, an age when life can be particularly shaping. That aspect was certainly considered. However, their minor disagreement has roots that run deeper. I must admit, the discomfort I felt playing estranged from Pedro within a scene wasn’t pleasant. It wasn’t enjoyable when the cameras were rolling. So yes, it was an intriguing exploration.

In the case of Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel, he expressed similar feelings during an interview with Ramsey about the tough journey of his character in The Last of Us season two. Discussing their conversation, Pascal said, “I found it touching how Craig [Mazin] and Neil [Druckmann] arranged our first shoot to be just the two of us in a more private setting. There’s a significant emotional gap between Joel and Ellie that the scene conveys, but we were still able to share some laughs on set and act like old friends.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, the intensity in “The Last of Us” was palpable. The remarkable character development, especially that of Joel, played by the talented Nicole Pascal, made it challenging for him to distance himself from the role. He eloquently expressed, “It was a privilege to be back, yet this experience has been unlike any other I’ve had. It makes it difficult for me to separate the emotions my character is experiencing from my own, in a way that isn’t entirely healthy. In a strange sense, I can feel their pain, and I fear, I fear I was in an unhealthy state of mind during this process.

Experiencing tension between beloved characters can be distressing, yet it adds to the joy when they eventually reconcile. In the upcoming season two of ‘The Last of Us’, we’ll undoubtedly face their conflicts. Here’s hoping for a swift resolution, lest our emotional wellbeing suffers! The second season of ‘The Last of Us’ starts on Sunday, April 13.
