Director Jon M. Chu clarified that there’s no truth to the casting speculations surrounding a possible Britney Spears biopic. He emphasized that the project is currently undergoing development.
It’s been rumored lately that pop singers Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and actress Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things were all in contention for the lead role; however, Chu firmly debunked these claims.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve been eagerly checking my social feeds, hoping for any news about the upcoming Wicked film. However, straight from the horse’s mouth, our beloved director has made it clear: no casting discussions have taken place yet. He acknowledged the tantalizing rumors swirling around, but assured us that the production is still in its infancy and far from reaching that exciting stage.
In reaction to a post suggesting that Grande, Carpenter, and Brown are in competition for the title of Pop Princess, Chu clarified on X that it’s all false.
He went on to say, “It sounds intriguing, but I haven’t spoken about the casting for this film at all. We’re still very much in the initial stages of production. My apologies.
Universal Pictures is set to produce a biographical movie about Britney Spears, with Chu, fresh from his work with Ariana Grande on the critically acclaimed musical film “Wicked,” taking the helm as director.
A production company acquired the licensing for Britney Spears’s top-selling autobiography “The Woman I Am,” which has sold 2.5 million copies within the U.S., with plans to adapt it into a film that delves into the life story and rise to fame of the renowned music figure.
Despite the uncertainty about the specific plotline for the biographical film, enthusiasts are already guessing potential actors to portray the famous pop star. Top candidates suggested so far include Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and Millie Bobby Brown. However, Chu has debunked these speculations.
Previously, Chu discussed the significance of creating a biopic for him in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in November last year. He expressed, “She symbolizes a generation of individuals who came of age during the 2000s and late ’90s, and her story is worth telling authentically. There are many aspects of us reflected in it.
At the given moment, I hadn’t yet found the scribe or penned a single word on our script. However, during the early stages of brainstorming, I felt deeply about the themes we wanted to address – respect for people, especially young talents, stars, women, and mothers. There are numerous aspects within these categories that I am eager to delve into.
Regarding Chu’s Wicked: For Good, the upcoming second-stage adaptation of the hit musical due in November, it seems that the timeline for the Britney Spears project may not move forward until after his current commitments are fulfilled. Still, eager fans are on tenterhooks for the official casting announcements.
