1975 marked the debut of actress Lynda Carter as Diana Prince in the live-action version of “Wonder Woman” on television, making her the first to portray this iconic DC Comics superhero. Her portrayal sparked a global phenomenon, with the series running for three seasons and leaving an enduring impact. It fostered generations of merchandise, costumes, and most significantly, instilled in girls around the world the belief that they could be the protagonists of their own stories. Half a century later, it’s been announced that The Paley Center for Media will honor Lynda Carter at the 2025 Paley Honors Spring Gala. The event, taking place annually in New York on May 19, will see Carter receiving her honors.
Maureen J. Reidy, President of The Paley Center for Media, asserted that Lynda Carter’s portrayal of Wonder Woman is an enduring representation of power, bravery, and self-empowerment. While other actresses have brought the character to life in various media formats, Carter has become synonymous with Wonder Woman for many viewers, even outside comic books. Notably, Gal Gadot’s portrayal in DCEU films is also well-known. In addition to honoring Carter, The Paley Center will recognize the TV series “Good Morning America,” which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, among other notable selections.
Since her days portraying the Amazonian princess, Lynda Carter has devoted her life to charitable work and activism. She’s collaborated with various institutions such as the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum, City of Hope, and ERA Coalition. Furthermore, Carter has been a vocal supporter for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, reproductive rights, and equal rights for LGBTQ individuals, acknowledging Wonder Woman’s role as an influential figure within the LGBTQ community.
In 2020, Carter appeared briefly in “Wonder Woman 1984” as the ancient Amazon warrior Asteria. However, with James Gunn revamping the DC Universe, it seems unlikely she’ll play that character again. Still, to millions, Lynda Carter will forever be identified as THE Wonder Woman, a title few others can claim with such deservedness.
