Drew Barrymore Reveals Being ‘Jealous’ of Other Kids Growing Up; Says It’s ‘Devastating’ Not Having ‘Traditional Family Dynamic’

Drawing from her own experiences, Drew Barrymore candidly discussed her challenges during her upbringing and how these experiences have shaped her parenting perspective. On The Drew Barrymore Show, she conversed with Moon Zappa, daughter of Frank Zappa, about her recent book on parenthood. This conversation delved into Barrymore’s past childhood and the bond she shares with her children now.

Drew spoke candidly about her aspiration to be a reliable mother figure for Zappa, whom she considers precious. She disclosed that her split with Will Kopelman was particularly heart-wrenching as it prevented her from establishing the kind of family she had always desired. “Everything felt incredibly painful and required a significant amount of time to heal from, as I didn’t adhere to the traditional family structure I had vowed to provide for my family because I myself did not experience that upbringing.

Discussing her childhood experiences, she shared some minor aspects that often left her feeling envious of other children. She explained, “Things like that can seem peculiar, but it’s soup when you’re sick.” Reflecting back, she missed the sense of security that came from knowing “her schoolmates” could rely on their parents in times of need.

In simpler terms, she remembered that when other children fell ill, they would go to the office to phone their parents. However, she always struggled to reach anyone when she was unwell herself. The actor from the movie 50 First Dates shared, “I was so envious of those kids who could call out and say, ‘Mom, Dad, come get me.’ I’d just be sitting there, thinking, ‘What must that feel like?’

Barrymore shares custody of her two daughters – 12-year-old Olive and 10-year-old Frankie – with her former husband, Kopelman. They jointly raise these children together.

On a different program titled “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” the actress confessed that her purpose here on Earth is to nurture young girls.
