What it Feels Like For A Girl First Look: Hannah Walters, Ellis Howard, And Laura Haddock Introduce Trans Coming-of-the-Age Film

The BBC has unveiled the initial glimpse of its upcoming trans series titled What It Feels Like for a Girl. Ellis Howard will star as the main character, with the show set to premiere soon on television screens. The story is based on the memoir of Paris Lees, who is a transgender woman herself and serves as inspiration for the adaptation.

In simpler terms, Howard is going to take on the character of Byron, a high school student, who flees his small hometown and ventures into Nottingham to experience the dazzling nightlife and urban lifestyle.

Besides the images, the BBC has also disclosed the roster of actors joining the upcoming eight-part series. Alongside Howard, we’ll see Hannah Walters, Laura Haddock, Michael Socha, Laquarn Lewis, Hannah Jones, Adam Ali, Alex Thomas-Smith, Calam Lynch, Jake Dunn, and Dickie Beau gracing our screens as well.

Speaking about the television adaptation of her book, Lees shared with Deadline that the toughest part was casting the lead role. “We’re tracking someone who transitions from being seen as a schoolboy by the world, to a university-bound trans woman, encompassing everything in between,” she explained. Later, she expressed, “The instant I met Ellis, I sensed something in him – a mischievousness, a subtlety, a depth – and I knew he was perfect for the part. And he exceeded expectations, time and time again.

In essence, the story revolves around a character named Byron who leaves his old life behind and plunges into Nottingham’s lively underworld. There he encounters a group of misfits known as The Fallen Divas, comprising Lady Die (Lewis), Sticky Nikki (Thomas-Smith), Dirty Damian (Ali), among others. A fierce rivalry develops between Byron and the sharp-tongued Sasha (Jones).

Further details about the release date will be rolled out by the makers soon.
