Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos thinks that Meghan Markle has a greater cultural influence than people might think. He referenced the intense media scrutiny surrounding their 2022 series Harry & Meghan, explaining that when they released the trailer, news outlets analyzed every detail on-screen for days on end.
Additionally, he emphasized that items associated with Markle rapidly became top sellers worldwide. “The shoes she wore were snapped up globally. The Hermès blanket on the chair behind her was sold out everywhere. There’s a strong interest in Meghan Markle. Some find them more popular than they are given credit for.
Recently, Netflix debuted “With Love, Meghan,” a lifestyle program starring Markle. The streaming service also owns a share in her latest venture, As Ever, an online store offering items such as edible flowers and baking ingredients.
As reported by Variety, Sarandos referred to Netflix as a collaborative partner rather than an active one, using the term “big discovery model” to describe its role. While not entirely embracing e-commerce, he suggested that this particular endeavor demonstrates how Netflix connects with consumers in ways beyond just streaming content.
Ted Sarandos mentioned that Netflix views chances to engage with viewers using consumer goods as an option. He explained that it aids in promoting and branding the company, and these actions reflect fan enthusiasm. Nonetheless, he emphasized that Netflix doesn’t aim to replicate Disney’s theme park strategy.
Instead, he likened the approach to regular visits at Topgolf, implying recurring customer engagement. “We aim to be a consistent presence in our fans’ lives, rather than being visited like Disneyland every few years. However, let me clarify that this doesn’t mean we’re downplaying Disneyland.
Over the years, Sarandos has played a pivotal role in shaping Netflix into a dominant force in global streaming entertainment. Since his arrival in the early 2000s, he’s been instrumental in the success of shows such as Stranger Things and Squid Game, broadened the platform’s original content offerings, and struck significant partnerships with influential personalities like the Obamas.
In the face of difficulties such as stock drops in 2011 and 2022, he has consistently held onto a far-reaching perspective for Netflix’s prosperity. Now, the service counts more than 300 million subscribers across the globe.
