Almost came true was a joint venture between Madonna, Barbra Streisand, and Bette Midler for a song collaboration. They aimed to record a distinctive version of “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better” from “Annie Get Your Gun”, which was intended for Streisand’s 1993 album “Back to Broadway”. Although the idea was intriguing, and all parties had agreed initially, unfortunately, this project didn’t materialize as planned.
The concept originated when compiling tracks for Streisand’s album. David Foster devised an arrangement to emphasize the unique flair of each artist: Madonna’s verses were given a rhythm reminiscent of disco, while Midler’s portion showcased a hint of Wind Beneath My Wings. The setting was imagined as a comical squabble between Madonna and Midler inside a restroom in a public place, with Streisand stepping out from a stall to settle the disagreement.
In an old interview from 2023, Jay Landers, representing Barbra Streisand, disclosed that both stars were ready and everything was organized for recording sessions. Unfortunately, right before they were about to record together in the studio, Madonna suddenly decided to withdraw without providing a clear explanation.
In a nod to a missed opportunity, Landers described it as an instance where a significant collaboration, promising a unique blend of Broadway and pop music, slipped through their fingers – much like a fish slipping away from a line. Although Madonna and Bette Midler didn’t end up performing on Broadway again, Johnny Mathis joined forces with Streisand to sing “I Have a Love/One Hand, One Heart” from West Side Story, and Michael Crawford, Streisand’s co-star in Hello, Dolly!, contributed to the Phantom of the Opera track “Music of the Night.
Despite the fact that audiences never got to witness this iconic three-piece band perform together, Barbra Streisand’s influence on Broadway has been unparalleled. She made her theatrical debut at the tender age of 19 in ‘I Can Get It for You Wholesale,’ receiving a Tony nomination, and was honored with a special Tony Award in 1970. Although this joint performance never materialized, it remains an intriguing footnote in the annals of music history.
