Discussions are underway between the creators of the Percy Jackson series and Disney+ regarding the creation of a live-action Power Rangers series.

According to The Wrap’s latest report, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in discussions with Disney+ and 20th Television about developing, managing, and overseeing a live-action Power Rangers series.

The intellectual property of the series belongs to Hasbro, who will be responsible for its production. This upcoming series intends to breathe new life into the franchise, catering to both fresh and long-standing fans of the iconic Power Rangers.

Hasbro reinventing Power Rangers

In 2017, Hasbro attempted to reimagine Power Rangers for the silver screen, however, the movie grossed merely $142 million against a production budget of approximately $100 million.

Previously, a real-life TV show was being created for Netflix, but it got canceled and labeled as “woke.” Now, it seems that Hasbro is considering a fresh approach for this series with a different collaborator, and that new partner might be Disney.

History

In 1993, the TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers made its debut, which was a Western adaptation of the Japanese Super Sentai franchise. This show gained massive popularity due to its unique blend of martial arts, gigantic robots, and vibrant outfits, eventually transforming into a significant part of ’90s pop culture.

Over the years, this franchise has been through approximately 30 unique seasons and offshoots, moving from networks such as Fox Kids, ABC, Nickelodeon, and more recently, Netflix. Notably, ownership of the franchise has shifted a few times, with Saban Brands transferring the rights to Hasbro in 2018.

The brand primarily caters to children, but it has also managed to maintain a substantial following among adults, particularly those who were fans of the original series as children.
