In a touching tribute, the forthcoming Netflix series, The Residence, has paid homage to the late Andre Braugher, who was due to portray a significant character before his sad demise in December 2023.
In the television series starring Uzo Aduba, Braugher – famously recognized for Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine – was chosen to play White House Chief Usher A.B. Wynter. Before his unfortunate passing from lung cancer, he filmed multiple episodes. However, he wasn’t able to finish the production. To honor him, they displayed a special tribute card at the end of their eight-episode season run.
Susan Kelechi Watson, portraying White House assistant usher Jasmine Haney, and the show’s creator Paul William Davies expressed great respect for Braugher. In turn, Kelechi Watson spoke fondly of her experience collaborating with him, praising his intelligence and humor, labeling him as both brilliant and a comedic genius. She reminisced about their first encounter on set, characterizing Braugher as charismatic, intelligent, and deeply committed to family values.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my feelings about Braugher’s departure. He was more than just an actor to me; he was a wonderful human being, a remarkable artist whose presence on screen left an indelible impact. The news of his passing has left many of us who had the privilege of working with him before in a state of profound sorrow.
After the death of Braugher, the character A.B. Wynter was re-cast with Giancarlo Esposito, who had a close relationship with the late actor. Davis acknowledged the challenge of filling Braugher’s shoes, but praised Esposito for his poise in paying tribute to his friend while making the role uniquely his own.
In my role as a lifestyle expert, I must say that the final episode of “The Residence” holds a deeply moving moment that, in a subtle yet profound way, honors the indelible impact of Andre Braugher on the series. David Simon, the showrunner, took the speech originally delivered by Uzo Aduba’s character, Cordelia Cupp, and reworked it following the actor’s passing, transforming it into what felt like a heartfelt eulogy.
The poignant “In Memory” card was strategically placed at the end of the series, symbolizing that Braugher’s presence continued to be an integral part of the project long after his character’s departure. This thoughtful touch served as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact he made on “The Residence.
After contemplating the situation, Kelechi Watson voiced her appreciation for the fact that the show managed to persist in the face of difficulties such as the pandemic, a writers’ strike, and Braugher’s demise. She underscored that everyone involved – cast and crew alike – invested their emotions deeply into the project, striving to uphold his legacy.
