A new adaptation of the movie “Starship Troopers” is being planned by Neill Blomkamp, in collaboration with Sony Pictures. Notably, Blomkamp will be responsible for both writing and directing this project. He is recognized for his work on titles like “Gran Turismo”, “Chappie”, “Elysium”, and “District 9”.
What is the Starship Troopers reboot about?
It’s still unclear what the storyline will entail, but Deadline indicates that the upcoming Starship Troopers film will adhere more closely to the narrative of the original Robert A. Heinlein novel compared to the 1997 adaptation directed by Paul Verhoeven.
The movie “Starship Troopers” produced four more installments: two live-action sequels in 2004 and 2008, and two computer-generated imagery (CGI) animated films in 2012 and 2017.
What are the differences between the Starship Troopers novel and movie?
In contrast to the film adaptation, the “Starship Troopers” novel presents distinct differences in its themes, mood, portrayal of military and governance, technology and combat scenes, character growth, and overall message and purpose.
In the book, the character Juan “Johnny” Rico is depicted as a Filipino cadet, but in the film adaptation, Johnny Rico is portrayed differently, with him being reimagined as a white Argentine athlete named Casper Van Dien.
The book depicts the Mobile Infantry donning exoskeleton outfits complete with jetpacks, nuclear weapons, and sophisticated armaments, whereas in the film, the soldiers appear more like standard infantry armed primarily with machine guns.
In the movie, Paul Verhoeven’s portrayal of the Federation has similarities to Nazi Germany, whereas in Robert A. Heinlein’s book “The Terran Federation,” it operates as a voluntary organization. Those who choose to serve in this system can acquire citizenship.
In contrast, the film depicts the military as bungling, whereas the book presents it as a virtuous course. Notably, the film takes on a humorous and critical tone, while the book is perceived as earnest and profound.
Military vs bugs could be the next Hollywood thing
It’s intriguing to note that a film adaptation of the popular video game “Helldivers 2” is under development, this time by Sony Pictures. The movie draws inspiration from the game’s themes and bears a resemblance to “Starship Troopers”.
Marvel was simultaneously working on a “Nova” series, rumored to have been inspired by the “Annihilation” comic storyline, where the Nova Corps confront alien insects originating from the Negative Zone.
Usually, in Hollywood, once a specific theme for a movie gains momentum, many producers and directors tend to follow suit. It appears that the upcoming trend in science fiction movies might lean towards military-themed productions featuring alien life forms such as bugs, with robot stories being equally appealing.
Henry Cavill is additionally working on establishing a cinematic universe based on Warhammer at Amazon Studios. The Warhammer 40k setting is a grim, far-off future where a deteriorating human empire fights persistent alien invasions and sinister supernatural entities. The primary insectoid aliens are known as Tyranids. Additionally, the Space Marines 3 video game is under development.
