Spider-Man Series Flops: Why Viewers Are Turning Away from Disney+

The revived X-Men ’97 and the more socially aware Spider-Man animated series, which was recently aired on Disney+, has yet to appear on Nielsen’s television ratings.

Marvel’s first two episodes didn’t make it onto any charts when they were initially released. Subsequently, three additional episodes became available, but they too couldn’t manage to secure a spot in the rankings. Most recently, episodes 6 through 8 have disappeared from the Nielsen streaming originals chart. Given that all episodes were launched within a span of three weeks, it appears that there was no surge of viewers catching up on the series by binge-watching.

As I’ve gone over, Disney automatically has Nielsen turned on in your Disney+ accounts.

What are the ratings?

The recently published Nielsen ratings span from February 10th to the 16th, during which viewers could stream episodes 6, 7, and 8 of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” on Disney+.

At the base of the ranking, Netflix’s “Cassandra” sits at the 10th spot with a total view time of approximately 465 million minutes, surpassing the watch-time for all episodes of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”. Interestingly, this isn’t due to animation issues as Amazon’s “Invincible” takes the 9th position.

Marvel fans aren’t interested

As a devoted Marvel fan myself, I find a striking resemblance between the narrative structure of X-Men ’97 and the live-action series such as Daredevil: Born Again, Agatha, Skeleton Crew, and The Acolyte, along with movies like Captain America: Brave New World, The Marvels, and Quantumania. However, it seems that fellow fans aren’t engaging, and for good reason – these offerings haven’t exactly captivated us. To make matters worse, the quality of content hasn’t been up to par either.

Can’t blame Superhero Fatigue

I can’t help but feel energized and inspired by the recent box office successes of films like Deadpool, Wolverine, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which collectively earned over $3.3 billion for Disney. Just as the audience isn’t turning away from these iconic characters because of changes made for political correctness, I too find myself drawn to the authentic portrayals of my beloved, long-standing heroes like Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Should be on chopping block

It seems that both “X-Men ’97” and “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” will receive more seasons, yet it’s not clear if this is due to high viewership on Disney+. Instead, these additional episodes were likely part of their original deals, possibly funded by DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). Given the low numbers, they might otherwise be facing cancellation.

Message is loud and clear

Indeed, the message echoes strongly – a sentiment long conveyed by fans: avoid altering cherished characters, refrain from using productions as a platform for personal values, and steer clear of casting blame on us for your missteps. We yearn for top-notch content and engaging experiences that aren’t overshadowed by your objectives.

How’s it been working out?
