As a racing enthusiast, I’m utterly captivated by the latest buzz sweeping across the globe – Formula 1, or F1 racing. It seems like everyone’s talking about it, and that includes us moviegoers. Soon, we’ll be gripped by the pulse-pounding, emotionally resonant F1 film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, who brought us Top Gun: Maverick. Unlike typical race car movies, this one was filmed and acted in real F1 cars at breakneck speeds. In fact, a significant portion of the footage was shot during actual F1 races, capturing the raw energy that only such events can provide. To ramp up our anticipation even more, the first trailer for the F1 movie has been released, starring none other than Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, and Damson Idris.
You can check out F1‘s trailer in all its glory below.
During an exclusive gathering honoring the unveiling of the F1 trailer, director Joseph Kosinski disclosed that no ordinary vehicle would be capable of replicating the enchantment of a genuine F1 race car on camera. Consequently, actors such as Brad Pitt and Damson Idris were actually filmed within vehicles traveling beyond 100 miles per hour, making this movie an exhilarating ride. It’s worth mentioning that Pitt and Idris even learned to drive these cars themselves to ensure the most authentic scenes for F1 (as evidenced in the F1 trailer). Kosinski described the film as a high-speed stage play, a spectacle rarely witnessed, traveling at 180 miles per hour. Truly an extraordinary production!
Furthermore, it was advantageous to discover that Pitt and Damson skillfully handled high-speed driving during the filming of F1. Notably, Lewis Hamilton, a renowned Formula 1 driver, endorsed their abilities. If they had not possessed these skills, the entire movie would have taken on a distinctly different character.
The filming of F1 was done swiftly during Grand Prix weekends, capturing scenes right amidst actual F1 races. The footage had to be perfectly timed within the fifteen minutes between the practice session and the main race. Moreover, it’s worth noting that the crowd depicted in the movie is a genuine audience, which adds an authentic feel to the production.
Absolutely, as depicted in the F1 trailer, F1 offers both exhilarating moments and poignant emotional scenes. Kosinski mentioned that the long-standing friendship between Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem significantly contributed to the film’s authentic camaraderie, a feeling that can’t be feigned. Moreover, watching Idris Elba and Pitt act together was truly captivating.
In addition to the trailer, F1 shares a robust synopsis:
Known as “the greatest who never became one,” Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was the most promising racer of Formula 1® in the 1990s, but his career took a dramatic turn after a disastrous crash. Thirty years later, he’s a freelance driver when Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), his old teammate and owner of a struggling F1® team on the brink of failure, asks for his help. Convinced by Ruben, Sonny agrees to return to Formula 1® for one last chance at greatness and to save the team. He’ll race alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), a talented rookie with ambitious plans. However, as the engines start, Sonny’s past comes back to haunt him, and he learns that in Formula 1®, your teammate is your toughest rival—and redemption isn’t a solitary journey.
Movie F1 hits cinemas and IMAX screens across the U.S. on June 27, 2025, and its international premiere starts on June 25, 2025.
