Scarlett Johansson explicitly stated that Black Widow’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has reached its conclusion. She believes that fans should now let go of any expectations for her character’s return.
In an interview with InStyle, actress Scarlett Johansson confirmed definitively that Natasha Romanoff, her character from The Jurassic World: Rebirth, has died after making the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Contrary to the release of Black Widow (2021), a stand-alone film about the character, Johansson emphasized that there are no plans for her return.
Johansson said, “Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay?”
Despite some fans holding onto hope, it seems that they are still yearning for Natasha to return. However, Johansson acknowledged this hesitance and clarified that everyone is still hoping she could come back. Yet, the actress firmly believes that her character’s journey concluded on a fittingly heroic note and should not be undone.
MCU enthusiasts find it hard to accept. They keep saying something like, “But there’s still a chance for her return!” Johansson emphasized. In case you’re not familiar, Natasha made the ultimate sacrifice by giving up her life to gather the Soul Stone, an important event in the movie that illustrates the Avengers’ role in defeating Thanos and reestablishing cosmic tranquility.
Johansson stated that Natasha’s selfless act played a crucial role in maintaining harmony throughout the cosmos, and it was now fitting for her to take a well-deserved break. Essentially, she said, “You know, I believe the fate of the entire universe is in her hands. It’s time for us to let go. She saved the world; let her have her moment as our hero.
Johansson’s departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn’t without its share of disagreements. In 2021, she filed a lawsuit against Disney in a high-profile court case, alleging that the simultaneous cinema and Disney+ release of her film, Black Widow, violated her contract which stipulated an exclusive theater premiere. The legal matter was eventually settled, but the terms of the resolution were kept confidential.
Following the completion of the novel about Black Widow, Johansson has embarked on fresh creative pursuits. One such venture is her directorial debut titled Eleanor the Great, which stars June Squibb.
For now, Scarlett will reappear on the silver screen with The Phoenician Scheme (on June 6) and Jurassic World: Rebirth (in July 2). Meanwhile, the Marvel Cinematic Universe prepares for a fresh chapter as Thunderbolts is set to premiere in May 2025.
