In the shadowy realm of crypto, the platform Hyperliquid (HYPE) finds itself under the watchful eye of scrutiny. A series of high-leverage trades on Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) have sparked whispers of potential money laundering activities, as if the digital currency world were a stage for a grand performance of intrigue.
Analysts, those modern-day detectives, have observed a curious pattern of unusually large and frequent leveraged trades executed with a precision that would make a Swiss watchmaker envious. This has led to a flurry of questions regarding the origins of the funds and the identities of the traders involved.
Spotonchain Raises the Alarm on High-Stakes Trades
Blockchain analytics platform Spotonchain has reported a series of significant leveraged trades on Hyperliquid, akin to a magician pulling rabbits out of hats. A well-heeled trader, it seems, deposited a staggering $5.22 million to open highly leveraged long positions in BTC and ETH, as if money were confetti at a parade.
This trader, with the audacity of a high-stakes gambler, placed an ETH long position at a jaw-dropping 50x leverage, entering at $1,884.4 and setting a liquidation point at $1,838.2. Meanwhile, a BTC long position was opened at 20x leverage, entering at $82,003.9 and setting a liquidation price of $61,182. Talk about living on the edge!
SpotOnChain further revealed that this trader has a history of executing short-term leveraged trades with a 100% win rate. In just two days, they netted a cool $2.2 million in profit. If only we could all be so lucky!
“In the past 2 days, this whale closed two quick ETH long positions with a 100% win rate, netting $2.2 million in profit,” Spotonchain disclosed, as if revealing a magician’s secret.
The consistency of these trades has led to speculation that this is no mere random market speculation. Instead, it hints at a sophisticated laundering operation or perhaps an insider trading scheme, as if the plot thickens in a gripping novel.
AB Kuai Dong, a crypto market analyst, speculated that the funds used in these Hyperliquid trades could be linked to North Korean hackers. It appears that North Korean cybercriminals have been known to dabble in high-frequency trading strategies on crypto platforms, as if they were testing the waters of a digital ocean.
The analyst suggested that these trades could be an attempt to launder illicit funds obtained through hacking, based on the anonymity and rapid execution of the Hyperliquid trades. A digital cloak and dagger, if you will!
“I am very curious about these large anonymous orders of Hyperliquid. Could it be that these large and frequent 50-fold openings are all gray market funds laundering money?” the analyst pondered, as if contemplating the mysteries of the universe.
Another analyst, known as Ai on X, supported this theory by pointing to previous research on high-leverage profits made on Hyperliquid. In early March, Ai reported that three addresses had generated $2.53 million in profit through GMX high-leverage trades, as if they were playing a game of poker with the universe.
Gambling or Insider Trading? Experts Weigh In
These addresses were linked to gambling platforms such as Roobet and AlphaPo, as if the lines between gambling and trading were blurring. They had also interacted with ChangeNOW, an exchange favored by hackers. Ai speculated that the traders might not be insiders but expert gamblers using potentially stolen funds to execute high-risk trades.
“Insider or ultimate gambler? It is indeed more like the latter,” the analyst mused, as if pondering the nature of existence.
Crypto analyst Adolyb, citing research from Coinbase’s Conor Grogan, provided further evidence of potential illicit activity, as if peeling back the layers of an onion.
“Coinbase people found out that it is a phishing address with 4 layers of jumps + gambling players,” Adolyb
