Karla Mosley Reveals Why She Stepped Away from Trans Role in The Bold and the Beautiful: ‘Truly Inappropriate…’

As a devoted follower, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve returned to daytime television, this time gracing the screens as Dani Dupree in the CBS drama Beyond the Gates. You might remember me from my days as Maya Avant on The Bold and the Beautiful. Reflecting on my past role, I’d like to shed some light on why I decided to part ways with playing such a groundbreaking character.

In a conversation with People, Mosley, who played Maya from 2013 to 2019, shared that she won’t be returning to the role. She explained that it would be inappropriate for a cisgender woman like her to portray a transgender character.

In a recent conversation with my superior, I was asked if I would take on a particular project. Initially, I considered declining due to the assignment seeming to conflict with my identity as a cis woman. While I openly embrace my queer identity, I am not transgender.

Even though Mosley initially felt apprehensive, she eventually agreed to play Maya, a character whose on-screen journey of self-discovery mirrored Caitlyn Jenner’s public transition in 2015. She reminisced about the encouragement from her friends who urged her to take on the role, saying, “If you don’t embrace this tale, this tale won’t be shared.

Discussing the effects of Maya’s adventure, Mosley explained how the plot promoted discussions on understanding and self-identification.

As a lifestyle expert, I find myself deeply appreciative of the character who stirred contemplation among those who adored Maya but struggled with her words. It prompted a profound question: “If I cared for her yesterday, why don’t I feel the same today?” This self-reflection, even in family dynamics, has been a catalyst for healing within families and communities. The narrative that unfolded around this character was instrumental in fostering understanding and reconciliation.

As a die-hard admirer, let me share this fascinating insight: Though I fully appreciate the depth and impact of Maya’s character portrayed by Mosley, she unequivocally declared her reluctance to embrace another transgender role in the future.

She clarified that at some stage, the part was no longer suitable or appropriate for her to portray. Consequently, she chose to relinquish it. Therefore, no, she has no intention of taking on another transgender character.

Nevertheless, Mosley continues to express enthusiasm for creating significant characters, as he expressed, “I’d be thrilled to embody a role with the depth and significance that Maya did.
