Recently, Disney has been cleared in a court case involving accusations of copyright violation regarding their 2016 animation, Moana. The lawsuit was initiated by a screenwriter who first filed it in 2020.
Four years ago, following the release of that enchanting animated film, I, as a dedicated fan and creative soul, found myself stepping into the legal realm under the title Buck Woodall. You see, the captivating tale of a teenage girl embarking on an adventure with a demigod stirred something deep within me – a feeling that my very own creation, Bucky the Wave Warrior, had been the inspiration.
Ecstatically, I can’t contain my excitement as I share the latest triumph of my beloved studio! Two weeks into a federal court trial in Los Angeles, we’ve emerged victorious! The verdict, delivered by an esteemed jury of eight, has sided with us, ruling that Disney did not have access to the 2011 screenplay or any earlier treatment related to it. My heart swells with pride, knowing that the originality and creativity of our work remains unquestioned.
The final ruling by the jury came after a serious three-hour deliberation.
After the outcome, a representative from Disney expressed their immense pride in the collaborative effort that went into creating ‘Moana’, and they were happy that the jury determined no connection existed between the film and the plaintiff’s works.
In adherence to the statements made by the jurors, I too affirm that our animation studio had no involvement with the script of Bucky the Wave Warrior. Consequently, we were not required to address any potential similarities between our work and theirs.
Discussing Bucky Woodall, it’s worth noting that he is a screenwriter residing in New Mexico. He contends that there are striking resemblances between his work and the Disney film, Moana. Both narratives center around teenage protagonists embarking on perilous journeys, going against their parents’ wishes. These young heroes manage to protect a Polynesian island, while simultaneously experiencing an adventure with a semi-divine character, portrayed by Dwayne Johnson, who bears tattoos.
In my exploration of these tales, I’ve noticed some striking parallels; for instance, both narratives involve a journey through tempestuous weather, and in each case, the characters find guidance from the celestial bodies above – the stars, to be precise.
