It’s been announced that the contemporary adaptation of the 1999 film “Cruel Intentions,” which initially aired on Amazon Prime Video in November 2024, won’t be coming back for another season. The series had its premiere but unfortunately, it won’t continue beyond its first season.
Initially airing on Freevee back in 2021, the series subsequently found its home on Amazon Prime Video in 2023, according to Variety’s report.
The show didn’t seem to take off among viewers and reviewers alike, failing to make it onto Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming lists. It received a 24% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 10 reviews, but Amazon doesn’t usually disclose viewership data, so we’re unsure how many people actually tuned in.
The series focused on pupils attending a highly esteemed college situated close to Washington, D.C., where status and prestige held immense significance.
The narrative primarily revolved around the step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil, portrayed by Sarah Catherine Hook, and Lucien Belmont, played by Zac Burgess. They were determined individuals, prepared to go to any lengths to preserve their influence.
In an attempt to safeguard our standing amidst a looming hazing controversy within the Greek life system, I devised a plan aimed at winning over Annie Grover, the Vice President’s daughter, to maintain our prestige and influence.
Apart from the lead actors, the ensemble featured Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Brooke Lena Johnson. The duo of Neal H. Moritz and Roger Kumble, key figures from the initial film, took on the roles of executive producers.
The cancellation signifies another unsuccessful effort to adapt Cruel Intentions for television. Earlier attempts included a pilot ordered by NBC in 2016 that was intended to be a continuation of the original movie, featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her character Kathryn Merteuil. Regrettably, this version didn’t progress further.
Previously, Fox had planned a prequel TV series, but it never made it to the screens. The unused footage ended up being incorporated into the straight-to-video movie “Cruel Intentions 2,” which came out in 2001. A second direct-to-video sequel, titled “Cruel Intentions 3,” was released in 2004.
1999 saw the debut of the movie adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons, titled Cruel Intentions, which featured Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair in its star-studded cast. Over time, it grew to be a beloved cult classic.
