In Monster Hunter Wilds, even though melee weapons serve as both your Primary and Secondary weapons, you’ll also have a ranged option through your slinger. However, there’s quite a variety of ammo types for the slinger, and switching between them can sometimes be a bit perplexing.
In the game Monster Hunter Wilds, there are two primary categories of slinger ammo. One can be stored in your pouch, while the other cannot. Although the game doesn’t officially label them this way, I’ll refer to them as “pouch ammo” and “found ammo” since they function distinctly. It can get tricky when you gather found ammo while you have pouch ammo equipped, but don’t worry! This Monster Hunter Wilds slinger ammo guide will help sort it all out for you.
How to equip and change pouch slinger ammo in Monster Hunter Wilds
If you attempt to use your slinger without any ammunition loaded, your hunter will move their left hand as if shooting, but nothing will come out. To fire your slinger, you must first load some ammo. This can be done by pressing and holding L1/LB button, then scrolling through your inventory with Square/X or Circle/B buttons to find the desired ammunition. Note that the slinger ammo is located in the same bar as other items like your Camping Kit and Fishing Rod, which may not be immediately obvious. Once you’ve selected the desired ammo, release L1/LB to equip it.
As a player enthusiast, whenever I check my inventory, any slinger ammo is symbolized by a bow-and-arrow icon. If this icon is nowhere to be found in my inventory bar, it simply means I’m out of pouch slinger ammo. For a comprehensive understanding of where to obtain these ammo pouches and their effects, refer to the list provided below.
To switch the ammo in your pouch slinger, pick a different type from the inventory bar.
– Additionally, there are two methods to remove the currently equipped pouch slinger ammo:
– Choose any non-ammo item from the inventory bar instead.
– Or, press Square/X on your controller to toggle equipping or unequipping the selected ammo.
This makes more sense when you have both types.
How to equip and change found slinger ammo in Monster Hunter Wilds
In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can load your slinger with ammo by picking it up directly from the surroundings. The game will automatically equip it for you. Here’s where you can find some sources of found slinger ammo:
1. Breaking parts of monsters
2. Looting fallen monsters
3. Opening supply boxes scattered around maps
4. Crafting at a Smithy using crafting materials
5. Purchasing from the Smithy using Zenny (the in-game currency)
In simpler terms, you can carry just one kind of ammunition for the slingshot that you find during your adventure, as these aren’t stored in your pouch. You can’t swap between two different found ammos on the fly. However, switching between the ammo you’ve found and the ammo stored in your pouch can be done swiftly.
If you find an ammunition and have a selected pouch ammo in your inventory, pressing Square/X will toggle equipping or unequipping the pouch ammo. This swap enables you to interchange between the two types of ammo. Importantly, when the pouch ammo is equipped, the found ammo symbol moves behind the pouch ammo symbol on your screen.
How to equip the Paint Pod and Throwing Knife slinger ammo in Monster Hunter Wilds
The throwing knife serves as a fundamental ammunition for your slinger, dealing only modest harm without inflicting any status conditions. On the other hand, the Paint Pod is a unique type of slinger ammo that allows you to tag and trace monsters. Both types are inexhaustible and are utilized via a distinct method.
To utilize either the Paint Pod or Throwing Knife, first ensure L1 (or LB on Xbox) is held down while rotating the wheel of essential items using the D-pad. Then, navigate with the right stick towards the bottom-right for the Paint Pod or up-left for the Throwing Knife. When you have a spare ammo item equipped, swapping to these temporary replacements won’t cause you to lose your original ammo. Simply press Square/X a few times to quickly switch back to the spare ammo when needed.
