Andy Samberg had a chance encounter with one of the original Backstreet Boys bandmates not too long ago. During a guest spot on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers’ podcast, he reminisced about that memorable meeting.
According to the performer from Palm Springs, he ran into someone backstage just before they both went on stage to perform “I Want It That Way” during SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, which was held last month.
He brought up the fact that their song became popular and was a memorable aspect in an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. At the same time, he remembered the period when he was gearing up for his appearance on Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary.
In his own words, Andy Samberg shared that during rehearsals for the show, a woman who was part of the crew guided him around. Just before he was due to perform, he felt the urge to visit the restroom. Unfortunately, the lady informed him in an insistent tone, “You need to be on stage now! You need to be on stage now!
He was quickly ushered towards the restroom, just as one of the Backstreet Boys was preparing to step inside. However, a woman informed the performer that Andy Samberg was urgently required on stage, and he had an immediate need for the bathroom instead.
I was completely starstruck! He was incredibly friendly, even took a moment to greet me, and then he casually mentioned they were covering my favorite tune – it seemed like he knew I was a fan of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I couldn’t contain my excitement when he said that!” The comedian expressed about his meeting with the Backstreet Boy.
Reflecting on that rather uncomfortable situation, it seemed likely to Andy Samberg that Kevin Richards might have been thinking he was quite “unpleasant.” Just wanted to say, my apologies for the bluntness.
If you’re unaware, I had the pleasure of witnessing Andy Samberg’s performance at an event, where he showcased some iconic Lonely Island tunes like “Dick in a Box” and “I Just Had Sex.” He was accompanied by some incredible artists such as Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny, T-Pain, and Eddie Vedder.
