What do the critics reviews say about Daredevil: Born Again?
The good:
I can’t help but sing praises for the captivating “Daredevil: Born Again,” a testament to the gritty, street-level storytelling that made the Netflix series a beloved fan favorite. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio’s performances are nothing short of exceptional, with their dynamic truly embodying the soul of the show. The darker, crime-thriller tone resonates deeply, providing an engaging blend of legal drama and intense action sequences.
Critics have commended it for its ability to balance nostalgia with innovative storytelling, seamlessly evolving characters while preserving the spirit of “Daredevil.” Some even go so far as to call it one of Marvel’s finest Disney+ series, bringing a much-needed dose of maturity and intensity to the MCU.
The bad:
The consensus among some critics isn’t unanimous regarding the show “Born Again.” Some believe it has difficulty harmonizing its Netflix origins with the MCU’s current style, leading to a series that feels fragmented. Critics of the pacing argue that it moves too slowly and needs more time to build momentum. Structure is another point of contention, as some find it an uneasy mix of superhero action and legal drama that doesn’t always succeed. Some reviews suggest that while “Born Again” continues the story well, it doesn’t quite match the heights of the initial “Daredevil” series. Action sequences are also criticized for being intense but lacking the cinematic impact of their predecessor.
The negative:
Generally, the majority of reviews for “Daredevil: Born Again” have been favorable. However, a small number of critics have delivered quite unfavorable appraisals. Below, you’ll find some of the most severe critiques (Rotten).
- Nicholas Quah (New York Magazine/Vulture) – Rotten score:
“Born Again simply doesn’t work as a continuation of the Marvel television project or an entry point for anyone new.” - Jeremy Mathai (Slashfilm) – Rotten score:
“By the end, the series sets up a season 2 that audiences will be dying to see. Unfortunately, the path to get to that point is pretty rough along the way.” (Score: 5.5/10) - Pramit Chatterjee (Digital Mafia Talkies) – Rotten score:
“The writing of Daredevil: Born Again is weird (…) There are some flickers of good action direction and filmmaking after the 6th episode; everything before that is outright garbage (…) The cast (…) deserves better.” (Score: 2/5) - Rafael Motamayor (But Why Tho? A Geek Community) – Rotten score:
“At best, the show simply reminds you of how good the Netflix version was, at worst, it makes you wonder if Daredevil should have just stayed dead.” (Score: 5.5/10) - Alan Sepinwall (Rolling Stone) – Rotten score:
“As a whole, it’s a Frankenstein monster of a season, with various parts stitched together in ungainly fashion.” - Therese Lacson (Collider) – Rotten score:
“Whether it’s too many cooks in the kitchen due to its production woes or a desperation to recapture lightning in a bottle, in trying to revive Daredevil, all Disney accomplishes is giving us a watered-down Matt Murdock…” (Score: 5/10) - Bradley Russell (Total Film) – Rotten score:
“There have been far worse Marvel projects, but few as disappointing as Daredevil: Born Again.” (Score: 2.5/5) - Mike Hale (New York Times) – Rotten score:
“The lack of narrative shaping takes away any force the themes of vigilantism might have had, reducing them to limp excuses for the sometimes stomach-turning violence.” - Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) – Rotten score:
“Too often draggy and predictable, this Disney+ endeavor appears to have learned little from its prior missteps.”
