Jesse Eisenberg ‘Honored’ With Polish Citizenship After His Film A Real Pain’s Oscars Win: ‘Have Been Very Interested…’

In 2025, Jesse Eisenberg received official Polish citizenship following the significant critical praise that his film “A Real Pain” received during the award season. Notably, Kieran Culkin, Eisenberg’s co-star in the movie, won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor during this time.

Eisenberg’s fortunate run persisted as he was formally granted Polish citizenship by President Andrzej Duda at a New York ceremony on March 4th. “I am incredibly and unbelievably honored,” he expressed during his acceptance speech at the event, according to Radio RAMPA.

He remarked, “This is an unparalleled privilege I’ve longed for over twenty years, something that has always captivated me.” It’s said that The Social Network star drew inspiration from his personal life to create the story of A Real Pain. The film primarily focuses on two American relatives, portrayed by Eisenberg and Culkin, who travel to New York to pay tribute to their deceased grandmother, a Holocaust survivor.

According to Variety’s report, the concept for this project originated following the death of Eisenberg’s great-aunt in 2019. Having escaped Poland for the United States in 1938, she served as inspiration for him. In tribute to his great aunt, he decided to film the movie in Poland, a decision that sparked his interest in applying for citizenship due to his ancestral connection with the country.

The director reminisced about strolling around town and slowly adjusting to the new environment. It was then that he realized his family had been residing there for much more time than they spent in New York. This realization stirred feelings of sadness within him, as he pondered over how their roots were pulled out from their ancestral land and all connections severed.

This upset me, but it also made me more determined than ever to make every attempt at reconnecting,” he continued. He acknowledged that acquiring Polish citizenship marked the beginning of his endeavor to rekindle his connection with his ancestry.

In May, the filmmaker shared with a local newspaper that he had submitted an application for Polish citizenship and expressed his desire to foster a stronger bond between Jewish communities and Poles, acknowledging the challenging past they share.
