In a chat on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Ben Stiller disclosed that he once asked ex-President Barack Obama if he’d voice a character for Season 2 of Severance. However, after making contact with him initially, Stiller ultimately cast Keanu Reeves instead.
Stiller, the executive producer and director of the Apple TV+ series, revealed that he reached out to Obama through a mutual friend who knew his lawyer. “Before asking Keanu Reeves,” Stiller shared with Kimmel, “I contacted President Barack Obama, but he declined.
Two days following the submission of the request, Stiller received an email from the former president, Obama. In this message, he graciously acknowledged Severance but respectfully turned down the offer.
Stiller reminisced about Obama’s words: “Hi Ben, really enjoy your series, particularly Season 1, eagerly anticipating Season 2. Seems like I won’t be able to fit this into my busy calendar.”
Laughing off the refusal, Stiller remarked, “Is there anything more significant than providing the voice-over for the animated structure in ‘Severance’?” Even though Obama declined the part, Stiller thought it was quite impressive that he took the time to reply.
In Obama’s absence, Stiller chose Keanu Reeves to be the voice actor for the Lumon Is Listening puppet propaganda video in the premiere of Severance Season 2. Although he wasn’t officially credited, it didn’t take long for viewers to identify Reeves’ unique vocal style as reported by Variety.
Stiller commended Reeves for his dedicated portrayal of the character, noting that he diligently performed numerous takes in Los Angeles. He went on to express that Reeves’ voice had a comforting and appealing quality, which perfectly suited the needs of the production team for the video.
In a conversation with Collider, Dan Erickson (the creator of Severance) emphasized that the voice should convey a sense of friendliness and warmth, yet harmonize with the unsettling atmosphere of Lumon Industries.
In January, the second season of the show “Severance” started airing, and you can watch the latest episodes on Apple TV+. The final episode of this season will be aired on March 21st.
