In HBO’s The White Lotus‘s third season, three friends, portrayed by Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, and Michelle Monaghan, experience strain in their friendships while vacationing in Thailand. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, in the third episode, it is revealed that Kate (Bibb) supported Donald Trump in the elections, causing a stir during dinner conversations.
Laurie (Coon) and Jaclyn (Monaghan), both based in New York City as an attorney and a Hollywood actress respectively, express shock upon learning that Kate attends church in Texas. Curious about her experience, they inquire about how she copes with conservative individuals there.
Jaclyn expresses that if she were surrounded by Texans who voted for Trump, she’d probably feel out of place. Laurie then queries Kate point-blank, “Didn’t you vote for Trump, though?” However, Kate remains silent but reveals something with her expression. In response to the apparent topic shift, Kate asks, “Are we actually going to discuss Trump tonight?
The political conversation had been planned for the storyline well ahead of Donald Trump’s official 2024 campaign announcement. Screenwriter Mike White penned that particular scene back in 2022, with filming taking place at the beginning of 2024.
In a conversation with Variety, Bibb expressed that during filming, Donald Trump’s political destiny was still unclear. “It seemed to me that Mike had a telescope looking into the future,” Bibb said, “because when we filmed it, it just didn’t feel…
The filming process had to be postponed because of the 2023 Hollywood strikes, yet the content stayed timely. Bibb mentioned that when the movie was being shot, it was unclear whether Trump would re-run for office, which made their dialogue all the more surprising.
Following dinner, Kate listens in as Jaclyn and Laurie chat about her. One of them mutters, “She’s always been like this, adopting the personality of whoever she’s with.” This prompts a strong response from Laurie: “Goodness gracious, are you out of your mind?” They then debate how Kate often allows her husband, Dave, to dictate her choices.
Jaclyn remarks, “It’s really disheartening for a woman, isn’t it?” she says about Kate’s life in Texas. They also ponder if people tend to grow more traditional as they get older. Overhearing their discussion, Kate quietly goes back to bed, understanding her friends’ perspectives on her.
Mike White revealed that the interaction among the trio was influenced by genuine friendships he witnessed during his travels. In a HBO interview, he explained that at first, he envisioned the three friends as being quite similar – bright-haired, full of energy, and spirited. However, over the course of the story, their subtle distinctions become more apparent, eventually causing friction that impacts their shared experiences.
