In January 2025, a defamation lawsuit filed by Drake’s legal team against Universal Music Group appeared to escalate the already heated conflict between him and Kendrick Lamar, which had been playing out in public.

As reported by Billboard, the music label has asked for a postponement in the commencement of the mentioned lawsuit.

According to the report, Judge Jeannette Vargas ruled on Tuesday against UMG’s motion to delay the first hearing, which is set for April. This decision allegedly followed the filing of court documents by Drake’s attorney, referencing Drake’s highly anticipated Super Bowl Halftime performance as the Damn artist.

It’s been said that Drake’s Canadian lawyer contended it would be unjust to postpone the hearing, as they claim Drake stands to suffer damages while the case is under court consideration. They supported this argument by highlighting a significant instance – namely, Lamar’s Super Bowl performance.

For those unfamiliar, in January, Drake took legal action against Universal Music Group over a diss song created by Kendrick Lamar – not “Like Us”. He claims the label is accountable for defaming him by boosting the song’s prominence, according to reports.

When confronted with the allegation, the label explained that it wouldn’t make sense for them to act against an artist they had invested heavily in, as stated in Billboard’s article.
