Disney+ Shocks Fans by Cancelling Highly Anticipated Tiana Series!

Reports indicate that the previously announced Tiana series, featuring Disney‘s inaugural Black princess from The Princess and the Frog, is no longer in development at Disney+.

In the upcoming animated musical show, Anika Noni Rose will be returning to play her role that she originally portrayed in the 2009 animated movie.

Why was Tiana canceled?

Information obtained by THR indicates that Disney+ has decided to halt production of the animated series, “Tiana,” as they are no longer producing extended original content for their streaming platform.

It seems that there’s a shift in focus for Marvel TV productions towards longer series, which can be broadcast annually on Disney+ (Daredevil: Born Again debuts today, with Season 2 already in development). Longer content usually spans between 30 to 60 minutes, whereas shows like Bluey, popular on Disney+, have shorter episodes that last around 7 minutes.

According to the report, it’s stated that due to Tiana being canceled, there have been layoffs at a studio based in Vancouver. Additionally, it’s said that an undisclosed full-length film destined for Disney+’s release has been abandoned as well.

Despite numerous shifts in the creative team and attempts to reduce expenses, unfortunately, the project named Tiana fell short of the required budget in the end.

What’s next?

Despite Tiana’s project being put on hold, The Hollywood Reporter indicates that an independent, short-format special based on The Princess and the Frog is currently under initial development.

Disney is reportedly shifting its strategy to put out one feature film annually, along with other short films and unique projects. Specifically, “Zootopia 2” is scheduled for release on November 26, 2025, and “Frozen” will follow suit on November 24, 2027.
