Disney has formally scrapped its planned Tiana series, initially unveiled in 2020, as part of a significant change in strategy that involves moving away from creating long-form content for streaming platforms like Disney+. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Walt Disney Animation Studios has chosen to discontinue the production of original Disney+ series, which resulted in the project’s termination.
Initially planned as a musical spin-off featuring Princess Tiana, voiced again by Anika Noni Rose (from The Princess and the Frog), the project underwent various creative overhauls. In the end, excessive production expenses led Disney to cancel the series.
Besides Tiana, another unannounced animated movie slated for Disney+ has also been postponed. This decision is part of a broader strategic shift, as the studio is now prioritizing theatrical films once again. In recent times, films such as Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 have proven successful at the box office, underlining Disney’s dedication to cinema screenings.
Regardless of its initial cancellation, The Princess and the Frog continues to be a significant part of Disney’s collection. In the year 2023, Disney transformed its Splash Mountain attractions into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Moreover, an upcoming short-form animated project, drawing inspiration from The Princess and the Frog, is currently in its early stages, featuring fresh narratives based on the 2009 movie.
In the future, Disney Animation plans to put out one movie per year in cinemas. The sequel to Zootopia is expected to hit theaters in November 2026, and Frozen 3 has been scheduled for release in 2027. With a renewed emphasis on box office success, Disney’s animation strategy is undergoing a change, potentially putting projects like Tiana on hold.
