Oscars 2025: Queen Latifa Gets Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, More on Their Feet With Her Rocking Tribute to Quincy Jones

At the 2025 Academy Awards, Queen Latifah paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Quincy Jones, who had passed away in November 2024 at the age of 91. Jones was one of the main honorees at the Governors Awards ceremony, which is hosted by the same board as the Oscars, in November, only a few days after his death. The Academy had announced back in June 2024 that Jones would be receiving an honorary Oscar to acknowledge his significant contributions to film through his music.

At the Oscars ceremony on Sunday, Latifah paid tribute to the producer of The Color Purple by performing an energetic version of Charlie Smalls’ song “Ease on Down the Road,” which was featured in the musical The Wiz, where both Diana Ross and Michael Jackson starred.

With an electrifying showcase, Latifah shone brightly in a radiant gold gown, accompanied by a group of dancers and vocalists, that left the audience utterly captivated and on their feet. The lively tunes resonated within the Dolby Theatre, causing Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Colman Domingo, and others in attendance to joyfully sway with the rhythm.

Last month, Jones was similarly honored during the 2025 Grammys ceremony. Erivo and Herbie Hancock opened the event with a tribute to the deceased music icon, as well as the victims who perished in the Los Angeles wildfires. A roster of esteemed artists, such as Stevie Wonder, Janelle Monáe, Lainey Wilson, and Jacob Collier, subsequently paid their respects to the renowned musician and the resilient soul of Hollywood.

Jones had 28 Grammy Awards to his name.

Before Latifah performed, Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg, who were in The Color Purple together, paid tribute to Jones. “The initial impression is that of a musical genius,” Oprah commented, going on to mention Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Ray Charles as some of the artists with whom the departed artist had collaborated.

Goldberg, speaking next to Winfrey, remarked, “When discussing Black excellence, we’re talking about Quincy.” Later, Winfrey acknowledged Jones’ significant role in her career by stating, “He was the one who discovered me for The Color Purple, which marked my debut in films.

“Quincy was love—he lived it out in human form and poured that love into others and into his work.”

Apart from “The Wiz,” which marked Jones’s initial Oscar-nominated venture, his compositions can also be found in films like “The Getaway,” “The Italian Job,” “In Cold Blood,” and several others.
