In December 2024, the New York Times published an investigative article titled “We Can Bury Anyone: Unveiling a Hollywood Smear Machine,” which implicated Justin Baldoni following Blake Lively’s accusations of sexual harassment. This headline-making piece targeted not only Baldoni but also his public relations team.
As a response, he initiated a lawsuit for $250 million against the media firm. Subsequently, this suit was withdrawn, and the media company (The Times) became part of the Jane the Virgin alum’s larger $400 million lawsuit that also involved Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, their publicist Leslie Sloane, and Vision PR.
On Friday, February 28th, Times brought forth fresh accusations against Baldoni and his film company, Wayfarer Studios, in a court filing. The media organization stated that “The story told by the Wayfarer Parties’ FAC is one-sided and sensationalized, attracting widespread attention,” further asserting that the New York Times should not be involved in this conflict.
As reported by Deadline, Lively appears to be complying with the media company’s wish to withdraw from the legal dispute between her and her costar on IEWU. A representative for the actress commended The Times for identifying Baldoni’s lawsuit as “an unscrupulous publicity stunt that holds no place in a court of justice,” according to their statement.
The representative asserted that the director of Five Feet Apart encouraged men to respect and trust women’s opinions, yet whenever they tried to express themselves, he and his wealthy patron Steve Sorowitz reportedly worked diligently to silence them. It was alleged that they employed a strategic social media campaign to discredit her and the media outlets that backed her.
In simpler terms, he emphasized that such aggressive strategies wouldn’t hold up in a court of law, and it would become clear how baseless Baldoni’s accusations against Lively and Reynolds truly are. The lawyers for The Times suggested that the First Amended Complaint filed by Wayfarer served its intended purpose – to generate publicity and be covered extensively by numerous news outlets.
The Blake Lively Vs Justin Baldoni trial will commence on March 29, 2025.
