Actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found deceased in their New Mexico residence over a week after it was discovered that Hackman’s pacemaker had stopped monitoring his heart activity. The startling revelation has raised numerous questions as officials investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
During a public briefing, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza shared that an initial examination suggested Hackman’s pacemaker ceased data recording on February 17, 2025. This has led investigators to speculate that this could have been the final day of his life. However, a comprehensive inquiry is still underway.
Officials confirmed that neither Hackman (aged 95) nor Arakawa (aged 64) showed signs of carbon monoxide poisoning in tests conducted on them. Tragically, their bodies were discovered inside their home on February 26, 2025, following a maintenance check and a subsequent wellness inspection that was initiated after a neighboring security alert. The unfortunate finding was made as a result of this sequence of events.
The authorities have determined that the deaths weren’t due to any criminal activity, but they’ve labeled them as “questionable” until more tests are done. Reports say Hackman was found in a room close to the kitchen, while Arakawa was spotted in a bathroom, surrounded by discarded pills. Initial examinations hint that Arakawa had been deceased for several days, or even weeks, based on the state of decomposition her body was in.
During a search at the residence, we found various medications such as a calcium channel blocker and a treatment for thyroid issues. Authorities have withheld comprehensive information about these medications due to HIPAA regulations, but they have disclosed that they are being examined in the ongoing investigation. Furthermore, two mobile devices were seized for further analysis.
It’s sadly reported that one out of the three pets belonging to the couple was discovered dead in a wardrobe, most likely due to lack of water. The remaining two pets have been safely taken care of by Santa Fe Animal Control.
Although some people speculated that carbon monoxide might have been involved in their demise, the authorities found no evidence of a gas leak or poisoning within their residence.
In a heartfelt declaration, Hackman’s daughters, Elizabeth and Leslie Hackman, together with his granddaughter Annie Hackman, expressed their sorrow over the loss. “The world knew him as an extraordinary actor, but to us he was simply Dad and Grandpa,” they said. “We will deeply miss him and are heartbroken by this devastating turn of events.” As inquiries proceed, well-wishers and family members wait with anticipation for more details concerning the sad demise of the cherished Hollywood figure and his spouse.
