Contrary to rumors circulating, Kathleen Kennedy is not planning to retire imminently. While she has discussed her possible successor, she’s not ready to step down just yet. In an interview with Deadline, she mentioned that she intends to keep working in her beloved field of filmmaking and won’t quit until she’s still actively engaged in it. Additionally, Kennedy shared some exciting updates about upcoming and potential Star Wars movies, hinting at how they will advance the franchise in both a literal and symbolic sense.
Star Wars Faces a Unique Problem Developing Movies and Other Projects
Kennedy spoke about the unusual and open manner in which Star Wars-related movies and projects are discussed, compared to other studios. He expressed his concerns, stating, “It’s concerning and aggravating that our development process is under such a microscope, and I can’t think of any other production company dealing with this level of scrutiny.” Kennedy added that due to the public nature of every potential project, Lucasfilm must also navigate the challenge of “controlling the narrative.
Lucasfilm Knows Star Wars Is a “Generational Brand”
Kennedy emphasizes that the studio recognizes and prioritizes the fact that Star Wars is an enduring “brand that spans generations.” She explained they strive to maintain this legacy. Additionally, Kennedy noted that platforms like Disney+ offer unique opportunities for creativity with Star Wars, which films may not be able to provide.
Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Movie Will Follow The Mandalorian & Grogu
Regardless of whether Kennedy chooses to leave her position this year, a decision she asserts is entirely hers, she’ll continue to executive produce both “The Mandalorian & Grogu” movie and the subsequent “Star Wars” film, which follows Director Shawn Levy’s standalone big screen project. This new venture will bring Din Djarin and The Child to theaters.
Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Movie Takes Place After The Rise of Skywalker
Regarding Shawn Levy’s independent Star Wars film, Kennedy mentioned that it is set several years following the sequel trilogy. Additionally, she hinted at possible returns of characters from the sequel saga, but emphasized that the story will primarily focus on introducing fresh characters.
Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Movie Trilogy Is the “Next Iteration, The New Saga”
Lucasfilm is actively and swiftly moving forward with Simon Kinberg’s newly unveiled Star Wars trilogy. According to Kennedy, this will serve as the “next phase, a new storyline” for Star Wars. Similar to Levy’s film, it will also be set following the events of Episode IX.
Currently, Kinberg is working on drafting the script for it. Kennedy anticipates receiving it around June. She’s quite pleased with how the project is progressing so far. “It’s been going exceptionally well,” she stated.
James Mangold Is Working on His Prequel Movie Script “Right Now”
Kennedy shared some news regarding James Mangold’s upcoming Star Wars prequel film, focusing on the inception of the Jedi Order. She mentioned that following his engagement with ‘A Complete Unknown’ and the awards season, he is currently writing the screenplay for this project.
It’s Hard to Tie Taika Waititi Down, Even For a Star Wars Movie
The development of Taika Waititi’s “Star Wars” film is not as advanced as that of Mangold’s, according to Kennedy. She explained that Waititi is currently collaborating with another writer on the project and expressed confidence in its outcome, stating that if they receive a script from him, it will be exceptional. Despite his busy schedule, Kennedy admires him and feels that whenever they get a script from him, it’s going to be fantastic. However, she mentioned that keeping Waititi committed to the project can be challenging due to his numerous engagements, as she has already expressed her love for the first act he presented to her.
There Are “Three or Four” Other Projects In Early Development
Regarding the number of additional projects that may be underway which we’re not aware of, Kennedy mentioned that “for precautionary measures,” Lucasfilm currently has “around three to four in development.
One scenario could be a tale unfolding within the New Republic period, which serves as the backdrop for the series “The Mandalorian”. Additionally, there are other projects underway in this timeframe. Currently, our primary focus is on this particular era because, given the progress of “Mandalorian”, we have a clearer understanding of its direction.
Lucasfilm often encounters delays with Star Wars projects and films due to needing to wait for skilled personnel. Kennedy explained that working on Star Wars can consume two or three years of an individual’s life, making it challenging to immediately start production.
Essentially, it implies that many of these projects will soon become the responsibility of Lucasfilm’s new president. For now, though, they can focus on other matters without concern.
