2025 saw Karla Sofía Gascón create history as the first trans actress nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. However, after some offensive tweets from her past resurfaced, causing controversy, Emilia Pérez’s actress had to miss out on attending a few award ceremonies, despite being nominated.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be gracing the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards, happening on March 2nd. Recently, The Hollywood Reporter sat down for an enlightening chat with Academy CEO Bill Kramer, who addressed the ongoing debates surrounding a certain actress. In response to these controversies, he emphasized the importance of mutual respect should she choose to attend the event.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but express my thoughts on the matter. Kramer made it clear that while the Academy doesn’t endorse hate speech, Gascón’s nomination is momentous and merits recognition. He emphasized that every nominee is extended an invitation and deserves to be treated with the utmost respect, a principle that holds true for Gascón, irrespective of the ongoing circumstances.
He noted that if Karla decides to join us for the evening, I truly hope there’s a sense of reverence in the air. Kramer made it clear that although over 200 nominees will be honored at the awards ceremony, the event is about so much more than just one individual.
On January 30, following the groundbreaking Oscars nomination of an openly trans actress, journalist Sarah Hagi publicly shared screenshots of her past tweets containing Islamophobic and racist remarks. After these posts resurfaced, Gascón faced criticism and reported death threats on social media platforms. Subsequently, she deactivated her Twitter account.
Later on, the actress expressed her regret for her thoughtless comments through an apology. She addressed the discussion surrounding her past social media posts that had caused distress, stating this to The Hollywood Reporter: “I wish to acknowledge the discourse about my previous social media content that has brought pain.” As a member of a marginalized group, she understood and sympathized with the suffering, offering an apology for contributing to it.
Besides earning a Best Actress nomination for Gascón, Emilia Pérez is also poised to attend the Oscars with an additional twelve nods, which include recognition in the categories of Best Supporting Actress (for Zoe Saldana) and Best Picture.
