Approximately ten years later, filmmaker George Miller revisited the realm of Mad Max with the release of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Story”. This prequel revolves around the narrative of Furiosa, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, who steps into a role previously embodied by Charlize Theron in “Mad Max: Fury Road”.
The movie traces Furiosa’s storyline prior to her encounter with Max Rockatansky, portrayed by Tom Hardy. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, the film failed to shine at the box office, earning only $168 million compared to its production cost of $173.8 million.
As a die-hard Mad Max fan, I’ve got to share some exciting news: George Miller hasn’t lost his knack for dreaming up more stories for our beloved post-apocalyptic series. In a fresh chat, he spilled the beans about having a script all set for another Mad Max movie. But here’s the twist – he’s not jumping in headfirst just yet.
He pointed out that they have another script to work on. Given his extensive experience in storytelling, he finds himself overwhelmed with stories – not just ideas floating around in his mind but also fully-fledged screenplays or detailed notes that are easily convertible into screenplays. Essentially, he’s a chronic daydreamer. As a child, this tendency to daydream was often criticized as a hindrance to academic performance, with comments like “George would perform better in school if he didn’t daydream so much” appearing on his report cards.
Miller clarified that although he has penned a prospective film in the vein of ‘Mad Max’, it isn’t his immediate undertaking. Instead, there are other priorities he wishes to address initially. However, he remains amenable to the concept should the scheduling align appropriately.
In his own words, ‘There are many tales, one of which is akin to Mad Max. However, this isn’t my immediate plan as there are two projects I’m eager to tackle first. But if by some cosmic coincidence, the stars align, you never know. Often, you set out to make a movie and then circumstances change. Some pieces fall into place while others don’t, so all I can say is we’ll see what happens.’
Although no definite plans have been announced for another Mad Max film, it’s evident that director George Miller isn’t running out of creative ideas. Warner Bros. Pictures may be wary following the underperformance of Furiosa, but Miller has hinted at potential sequels such as Mad Max: The Wasteland, a prequel focusing on Max in the year prior to Fury Road events, and another film centered around Charlize Theron’s Furiosa governing the Citadel after Fury Road.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the thrill of anticipation knowing that more Mad Max adventures are brewing in George Miller’s creative mind, though we might have to exercise patience for these stories to unfold on the big screen.
