Tarryn Wyngaard on ‘Gebokste Liefde’

Actress Tarryn Wyngaard is making a name for herself through captivating performances in shows such as “Devil’s Peak” and movies like “Pou”. Recognized for her dramatic roles, Wyngaard steps into the world of romantic comedies for the first time with the film “Gebokste Liefde”. Spling recently had the opportunity to chat with Tarryn about her starring role, the unique blend of genres in this movie, and her experience portraying the strong-willed character, Suma-Lee.

But my first question for you is, how did you get into acting? And was it always something you wanted to do?

In my youth, there was a slight disconnect between my intellectual and emotional self. Academically, I excelled in subjects like science and biology at school, but my passion lay in creative pursuits such as music, ballet, and acting. When it came time to choose a path, I opted for the performing arts stream at the University of Cape Town.

Initially, I favored one option, which was it. As for the runner-up, that was a BSc in Microbiology, with a focus on Genetics. Thus, I’ve always felt like I harbored two distinct preferences within me. (Or) My initial pick was that choice, and my backup was a BSc in Microbiology specializing in genetics. This created a sort of internal dichotomy for me.

When I was offered a spot at UCT for acting studies, I realized only 26 individuals in the country were given such an opportunity. It felt like a remarkable sign to me, and I took quite a risk by pursuing it. Interestingly, my family wasn’t necessarily anticipating this career path for someone like me at school.

But yeah, eventually, I always say just that my heart won, and I’m so glad that it did. Yeah.

Okay, yeah, no, that’s kind of a story that I’ve had. And it makes me also think of the movie Material in terms of, going after your dreams, pursuing your dreams, and throwing everything behind it. But you know, to me you are a great example of that actually happening and becoming a reality. So good on you.

So, you know, I can’t see but I’m blushing.

Well, speaking of blushing, like, when you’re in public, and you’ve got a face that’s recognisable. And you’ve been in a lot of productions that would make you recognisable and in the public eye. And I wanted to find out from you, what’s generally the kind of reaction you have when someone sees you in person and goes like the penny drops, and they’re like, Oh, isn’t that Taryn Wyngaard?

It’s surprising, as I don’t typically get recognized much, given that I mostly prefer staying indoors and tend to avoid social situations, not being a fan of big parties. In general, I enjoy keeping a low profile, and my circle of friends is quite intimate. However, one person at Exclusive Books managed to identify me from the book “Devil’s Peak“.

Essentially, there’s a brief pause as if they’re gathering their thoughts. They seem perplexed, glance at you, collect themselves, and then deliver the line or scene. It might be due to the variety of roles I play that my appearance can change significantly.

My hair is both long and short, and I strive to lose myself in my roles. It might be due to my extensive involvement in South African cinema that you could identify me, yet I tend to steer clear of soap operas.

Okay. Well, I did recognise you during the Silverskermfees. I don’t know if you remember that happening. But yeah, and I would because I’ve just seen you in the movie, Gebokste Liefde, which is what we were talking about.

But before we get onto that, I wanted to find out, which role are you best known for? And has that altered your acting career in terms of the kind of roles you’re getting? Is there anything that people say, I want Taryn for this because she was like that? I don’t know if I’m asking that right.

To put it another way, my performances are a diverse collection. I’m often recognized for intense and dramatic roles. If a character demands seriousness or delving into the depths of emotion, especially those that are deep or dark, I believe I excel in those areas. So, I would say that’s what I’m particularly renowned for.

Boksted Love” was my initial foray into the genre of romantic comedies, characterized by its playful, affectionate, and cozy nature. However, I must admit that I tend to lean towards dramatic roles.

Well, I think, I mean, maybe they, they kind of thought of you for that role, because there is a little bit of an element that sort of goes a little bit, not sinister, but there’s a sort of wild side to Gebokste Liefde.

This movie isn’t always cozy and comforting, but there are moments that feel that way. However, it’s important to remember that the unexpected is part of its charm – it doesn’t follow typical romantic storylines like boy meets girl, etc.

The film isn’t constantly warm and snuggly, but it has those feelings in certain parts. Remember, this movie isn’t predictable, so don’t expect a simple boy-meets-girl plot.

Or even more concisely:

While the film offers some cozy moments, don’t expect a conventional love story – it’s unpredictable!

We prepare the movie for viewing this way, and only once you dive in will you discover…”

“The way we present the film is like this. Only when you start watching will you find out what it has…

…something else.

Yeah. A whole lot else.
