How to Catch Whoppers in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, Whoppers are the big fish swimming around. To catch them easily, you’ll want to use special baits. There’s an achievement in the game called “A-fish-ionado“, which requires you to catch 30 of these larger fish.

To make things simpler for you, we’ve crafted this guide with crucial advice on catching the mammoth fish of Monster Hunter Wilds effortlessly. We’ll also share the prime fishing location within the game.

Hope it helps! Let the fishing begin!

How to obtain the A-fish-ionado trophy/achievement in Monster Hunter Wilds

Step 1: Complete the Campaign

As an enthusiast, I’d suggest starting off by wrapping up the main storyline of the game before diving into the side quests related to fishing. This initial step might seem a bit prolonged, but it’s crucial for your future ease. Completing these fishing-focused side quests is key to unlocking all the necessary lures. However, you can skip the last one as it won’t contribute towards obtaining all the required lures.

Step 2: Complete the Fishing Side Quests

Each kind of Whopper responds to distinct lures, so if you don’t finish these fishing tasks, it will become significantly harder and time-consuming to catch them. You can obtain them from the NPC Kanya at the Scarlet Forest region’s camp. To get them, you need to accomplish the following missions:

1) Option: The items you’re looking for can be acquired from NPC Kanya, located at the campsite within the Scarlet Forest region. To get them, make sure to finish these assigned tasks first:

  • Fishing: Life, in Microcosm
  • Seeking the Goldenfish
  • Fishing for Favor
  • The Catch of a Lifetime

Upon wrapping up the side missions detailed earlier, she’ll task you with a quest titled “Razzle Dazzle.” By then, we’ve amassed all the lures required for our mission! (First person: I’ve completed the tasks mentioned above. She’ll then assign me the Razzle Dazzle quest, and by that point, we’ve gathered all the necessary baits!)

Step 3: Farm Time!

The optimal location for acquiring this trophy is undeniably within the Forest, specifically at the “beach” area where Uth Duna appears. You’ll find it marked as number 17 on your map. Close by, you’ll notice a tent; feel free to take a break there. Ensure the conditions are set to ‘Bountiful’ and ‘Day Time’. Don’t forget to wear a Ranger Jewel in your armor for enhanced fishing skills.

Hope this helps!

The whoppers:

  • Great Trevally: A “short” but fat fish that has a gray color. It is attracted to the Tuff Joint Bait.
  • Gastronome Tuna: A large and fat, super fast, blue fish. It is attracted to the Tuff Joint Bait. During my tests, it was the monster that bit the bait most frequently.
  • Goliath Squid: It only appears at night but is the second most frequent bait biter. Use the Tentacle Jigs.
  • Gajau: This is the gigantic fish that has its fin out of the water. It is attracted to the Duster Rigs. It is one of the Whoppers that bite the bait the least frequently, so it’s not worth focusing too much on it.

To find out how many whoppers you’ve caught, navigate to Options > Information > Monster Field Guide > Aquatic Life Guide and take a look.
