last night, it came as a shock to the gaming community as Warner Bros. unexpectedly declared the closure of Monolith Productions, renowned for their innovative games like ‘Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor’ and its successor, ‘Shadow of War.’
These games feature a groundbreaking system called Nemesis, which creates distinct enemy memories based on player encounters. This means that if you cross paths with one of these adversaries, they’ll remember you and may even seek revenge or advance in rank. Although it’s incredibly clever, the longevity of this system is currently uncertain.
Warner Bros. has secured a patent called “Nemesis System” that encompasses elements like character nemeses, fortresses, social feuds, and followers within video games. This patent remains active until August 11, 2036, having been filed in 2016 and granted five years later.
Regrettably, despite the patent being valid, the idea of incorporating this system into a future Wonder Woman game was abandoned together with the studio’s shutdown. This development has left both gamers and developers feeling disheartened, as it seems that this innovative system may remain untouched for quite some time.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that Warner Bros. Games has emphasized they’ll keep developing games, but with a twist: they’re going to zero in on iconic series like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, the DC universe, and Game of Thrones. With the impressive Nemesis system at their disposal, there’s a chance it could elevate these franchises, though it’s still uncertain if Warner Bros. will leverage this technology in future projects.
