Christopher Nolan’s Bond Dreams Were Reportedly Blocked by Barbara Broccoli

In January 2024, towards the end, Barbara Broccoli – the long-term producer and caretaker of the James Bond series – found herself in New York City. There, she enjoyed a show of her musical titled “Buena Vista Social Club”. During this event, she was joined by high-ranking executives from Amazon MGM Studios, namely Jennifer Salke, Courtenay Valenti, and Julie Rapaport.

The gathering, featuring dinner and deliberations, was aimed at ironing out the strategies for James Bond’s future under Amazon’s management, post their $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in 2022. However, it is reported that Broccoli found Salke’s leadership lacking and departed for London feeling disheartened.

Over many years, Broccoli and her sibling Michael Wilson, both producers of Bond, have kept a firm grip on the franchise, ensuring that they didn’t completely capitalize on the spy series.

Currently, following extensive discussions, Amazon is on the verge of acquiring sole ownership of the Bond franchise – a significant, largely unexploited cinematic asset with potential to rival Marvel, Lucasfilm, and DC. Nevertheless, this acquisition is contingent upon receiving approval from regulatory bodies in both the U.S. and U.K.

The primary source of friction arises from Amazon’s ambition to have more authority. As Roy Price, former head of Amazon Studios, stated, “It’s aggravating to own a Ferrari but not decide where or when it drives.” On the other hand, Broccoli has consistently been cautious about Bond, understanding the delicacy involved in handling such a complex character as 007.

Among the intriguing speculations about the Bond series, there’s one centering on acclaimed director Christopher Nolan. Following the triumph of Tenet, he has shown keenness towards helming a Bond movie.

Due to Broccoli’s firm stance on retaining creative control in the films, Nolan – famous for his insistence on final cut – found himself unable to become part of the Bond franchise. Instead, he chose to work on Oppenheimer, a project that earned close to $1 billion at the box office and won an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Nolan’s dreams of directing a Bond film were dashed, similar to how Steven Spielberg’s aspirations were thwarted decades earlier. This happened when Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, the father of the current producer, refused to work with the director following the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, due to his lack of experience at that time.

As a seasoned movie critic, I’ve found myself torn in my evaluation of the creative control wielded by the Broccoli clan. On one hand, their unwavering stewardship has garnered them accolades for maintaining the essence of Bond through the years. However, on the other, this same devotion has drawn criticism due to Bond’s complex character origins and traits that seem challenging to update in today’s context.

Some people believe that Broccoli’s careful character development maintained Bond’s timeless appeal, but others contend that her stringent control may have impeded the franchise’s growth, especially as the entertainment industry evolves swiftly.

Amazon intends to modernize the James Bond franchise by expanding it beyond films into a comprehensive “Bond Universe” that may include television shows, spin-offs, and interconnected narratives. Given its vast resources, this endeavor could be an exciting venture; however, whether Amazon has the capability to successfully tackle such a challenge remains uncertain.
