Over the last few years, it feels like Doctor Who has been somewhat distant and yet surprisingly close at the same time. With fewer episodes and less frequent seasons since around 2017, and to be honest, I haven’t found any of those seasons particularly captivating. However, the arrival of new Doctor Who always brings excitement! Today, BBC has announced that season two (or whatever you prefer to call it) featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the lead will air on Disney+ at midnight Pacific on April 12th. Additionally, they’ve unveiled some new images and revealed that Alan Cumming from The Traitors will be voicing a cartoon character!
In an unexpected turn of events, Alan Cumming, who previously portrayed King James I in the episode titled “The Witchfinders,” returns to the series in a completely new role. His character, humorously named Mr. Ring-a-Ding, will make his appearance in the as-yet untitled second episode of this season. Here’s a brief description: “Mr. Ring-a-Ding is a cheerful and musical cartoon character who resides in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, following years of screenings in cinemas nationwide, Mr. Ring-a-Ding suddenly gazes beyond the screen and perceives the real world for the first time—and the repercussions are chilling.
Who in this world (or beyond) can predict what that will turn out to be? Showrunner, executive producer, and writer Russell T Davies declared, “Only Alan Cumming could infuse a rogue cartoon with such intelligence, mischief, peril, and amusement. He takes the universe of Doctor Who to uncharted realms of wildness and madness, and it’s a privilege to have him join us on the TARDIS.
Furthermore, the recent press release has unveiled fresh promotional photographs featuring Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu, who will be debuting on the series this year as the character Belinda Chandra, her companion.
The statement further reveals that the upcoming season will comprise eight weekly episodes and will feature a return of these characters: Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, Ruth Madeley as Shirley Ann Bingham from UNIT, Anita Dobson as Mrs. Flood, and Susan Twist, presumably portraying Susan Triad. Alongside Gatwa and Sethu, these actors are set to rejoin the series.
We’re quite excited and eagerly awaiting the release of a trailer shortly, along with episode titles and the list of writers. However, as the saying goes, “Time waits for no one,” so it should arrive sooner than expected.
