It appears that the upcoming Netflix series, Running Point, which was jointly created by Mindy Kaling, is encountering some problems even prior to its planned debut. Unfortunately, the project has found itself ensnared in legal issues.
It appears that Pepperdine University is claiming they have taken legal action against Netflix and the production company. They allege in this lawsuit that a TV show produced by these entities features a basketball team whose visual identity – including branding, logo, and color scheme (blue, white, and orange) – resembles that of their sports teams.
In addition to this, the business has also emphasized the number 37 in its promotions, which holds significance for the university since it was established in 1937.
According to reports, the lawsuit states that the series’ promotional trailer features instances of questionable, offensive, and unlawful actions, which are portrayed as acceptable. These supposedly involve allusions to drug use, violent scenes, explicit sexual content and language, and profanity. This content is said to have caused Pepperdine University, a Christian learning institution, to distance itself from the show due to its objectionable nature.
Based on the report, Mindy Kaling, Elaine Ko, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen – who are the creators of the project – were not listed among those who filed it.
The plaintiff wants a court order (an injunction) that stops Pepperdine from using their trademarks any further. Additionally, they’re asking for monetary damages as they believe their brand suffered harm due to infringement and misuse, as stated in the report.
Starting next February 27, 2025, the movie “Running Point,” featuring Kate Hudson, can be streamed on Netflix.
