For over five years, Obsidian Entertainment hasn’t produced a standalone single-player fantasy RPG like Avowed. Following the completion of 2018’s Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, which is set in the same world as Avowed, Obsidian ventured into creating games from different genres, such as the sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds and the 2D adventure game Pentiment. Although Avowed might not be identical to Pillars of Eternity, given its first or third-person perspective instead of an isometric one, it offers a nice deviation from the studio that is now predominantly recognized for other types of projects.

In a distinctive manner, Obsidian stands out among other developers because their latest games offer diverse gaming experiences. While they incorporate RPG elements, titles like Grounded, Pentiment, and The Outer Worlds differ significantly from one another when it comes to gameplay mechanics. However, these games share one common trait – they all include clever Easter eggs. Obsidian has a talent for embedding pop culture references in their video games, and Avowed is no exception to this tradition. Not only does Avowed contain an Easter egg linked to Avatar: The Last Airbender, but it also offers a Fallout: New Vegas-themed quest. Some of the more intriguing Easter eggs in Avowed, though, are not even hidden within the game itself but can be found in its Xbox achievement list.

The Names of Many Avowed Achievements Are References to Popular Franchises, Like Fallout

In both the Xbox and Steam versions of the game Avowed, players have the opportunity to earn numerous achievements during their playthrough. Specifically, there are 50 achievements in total within Avowed, with 18 of them being hidden. Unlike games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or the Gears of War series, achieving a 100% completion in this game isn’t overly challenging. The majority of Avowed’s achievements are straightforward and can be categorized as either being related to the story or specific tasks, such as “successfully complete 15 stealth attacks on enemies” or “defeat 10 Spiders and 10 Beetles.

One intriguing aspect of some accomplishments in the game ‘Avowed’ is that their names are secret tributes to other franchises, both within and beyond the gaming world. Notably, the game ‘Fallout’ is frequently referenced in the list of achievements. For instance, there’s an achievement named ‘Two Bears High-Fiving’. While this name might be puzzling for those not familiar with Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic series, it actually references a minor tribal NPC with the same name from the ‘Honest Hearts DLC’ of ‘Fallout: New Vegas’.

In a creative twist, some enthusiasts developed a modification for the game ‘Fallout: New Vegas’, altering one of the response options for the Rorschach inkblot test at the outset to depict “two bears giving each other a high-five”. As a nod to this, the developers at Obsidian incorporated a Two Bears High-Fiving NPC into ‘Fallout: New Vegas’.

The accomplishments list of Avowed includes several Easter eggs that are worth pointing out as well. For instance, the achievement titled “Everyone Disliked That” in the game is a tribute to a well-known message in Fallout 4, which became a popular meme among gamers. Similarly, the achievement named “That Sign Can’t Stop Me Because I Can’t Read” is a clear reference to a line from the children’s television show Arthur. Additionally, an achievement called “Gotta Cache ‘Em All” pays homage to the famous slogan “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” from the Pokémon franchise.

In the game Avowed, several of its accomplishments are labeled based on the games Obsidian has previously worked on. For instance, an achievement that becomes available once players have completed all side quests in the game is called Pentiment, while another that activates when players align with the Steel Garrote faction is named Tyranny, which is a clear nod to the 2016 CRPG of the same name.
