The projected starting cost is around $100 billion, while future growth might increase this figure to a potential $500 billion by the year 2029.
3D or Web3 initiatives are similarly dedicating resources to artificial intelligence (AI) advancements. Just recently, DWF Labs, a prominent venture capital firm in the cryptocurrency sector, unveiled a $20 million fund aimed at fostering rapid development in autonomous AI technologies.
This month, the NEAR Foundation, a supporter of the NEAR protocol, unveiled a $20 million fund aimed at boosting the creation of self-governing and verifiable agents based on NEAR technology.
According to Grachev’s statement to BeInCrypto, it seems clear that history indicates that anything capable of automation is likely to be automated, and it’s likely that both business procedures and everyday activities will eventually be handled by artificial intelligence agents.
But as AI development accelerates, the potential for its misuse becomes a growing concern.
Malicious Use of AI Agents
In the realm of Web3, Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents are swiftly moving towards common use. These intelligent entities bring a wide range of functionalities, such as market analysis and even autonomous cryptocurrency trading.
On the other hand, as AI becomes more deeply ingrained, it brings forth significant hurdles. There’s a growing worry about the misapplication of AI by ill-intentioned individuals, which could manifest in various ways, such as basic phishing attempts or complex ransomware attacks.
Since late 2022, the easy accessibility of advanced AI technology has significantly transformed content creation processes, yet it has also drawn in malicious users aiming to misuse this technology. This widespread distribution of computational power has amplified adversaries’ abilities and possibly made it easier for less skilled threat actors to join the fray.
Based on findings from a report by Entrust, the number of digital document forgeries aided by artificial intelligence has surpassed physical counterfeits and experienced a significant 244% rise in 2024 compared to the previous year. Deepfakes, meanwhile, comprised approximately 40% of all instances of biometric fraud.
According to Grachev, it’s currently being exploited for fraudulent activities. It’s often employed for deceptive video chats where individuals are falsely portrayed and their voices are manipulated.
Previous instances of such deceit have been featured prominently in media reports. For example, just last week, an employee in the finance department of a global corporation based in Hong Kong unwittingly approved a payment of $25 million to scammers who employed deepfake technology.
During a video conference, an employee thought he was interacting with his coworkers, including the company’s financial head. Initially uncertain, he followed through with the payment once everyone seemed genuine and legitimate, as per accounts. Unfortunately, it turned out later that all participants were artificial deepfakes.
From Early Adoption to Mainstream Acceptance
As an analyst, I share Grachev’s perspective that malicious uses are an unavoidable aspect in the evolution of new technologies. It’s important to recognize that technological advancements often begin with initial flaws, which gradually diminish as the technology matures. To illustrate this point, let me cite two instances from the past: the early days of the World Wide Web and Bitcoin. Both technologies were initially riddled with vulnerabilities, but over time, these issues have been addressed and the technologies have become more secure and reliable.
He pointed out that the early days of the Internet were primarily associated with adult content websites. Similarly, Bitcoin had its origins linked to illegal drug transactions, but over time, both have evolved and become more legitimate.
Multiple sources agree with Grachev’s viewpoint. They posit that the adult entertainment sector significantly contributed to the initial use and advancement of the Internet. Not only did it offer a substantial market, but it also spearheaded technologies such as VCRs, video streaming, virtual reality, and communication platforms in various forms.

As a crypto investor, over time, measures have been implemented to regulate and limit the frequent availability and access to adult content online. However, it remains one of the numerous services the internet continues to offer today.
Bitcoin’s Journey From Darknet to Disruption
The development path of Bitcoin shares striking similarities with how the Internet was initially employed. In its early stages, Bitcoin was frequently connected to illegal activities on the dark web, such as drug trading, fraud, money laundering, and other unlawful practices. Its anonymity features and simple cross-border transaction capabilities made it an attractive option for criminals.
While Bitcoin is often associated with illicit activities, it also offers a wide range of legitimate uses. The underlying blockchain technology, fundamental to cryptocurrencies, addresses practical issues in various sectors and challenges conventional financial structures.
Even though both cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies are still relatively new and developing, they’re expected to grow further. Similarly, as AI technology becomes more prevalent, it too will continue to advance. Garchev believes that making mistakes is essential for learning and adapting in these evolving fields.
As a researcher, I often find myself reflecting on the fact that fraudulent activities tend to emerge before we devise strategies to counteract them. It’s an unfortunate reality, yet it serves as a catalyst for growth and understanding. We learn from these occurrences, it’s part of the process.
Pondering over these anticipated scenarios, I can’t help but question who will bear the responsibility when such events unfold.
Liability Concerns
Discerning who’s accountable when damage happens as a result of an entity acting, be it in the realm of law or ethics, can be quite intricate. It leads us to ponder about how we could possibly make artificial intelligence responsible for its actions.
As a crypto investor, I find myself grappling with the intricacies of accountability within AI systems, which can be quite perplexing. The enigmatic “black box” nature, unforeseeable actions, and self-learning attributes of these advanced machines make it tough to pinpoint who should bear responsibility when something unexpectedly goes awry. It’s a challenge that requires us to rethink our conventional notions of fault.
Additionally, since numerous entities participate in the creation and application of AI technology, it becomes challenging to pinpoint responsibility for AI malfunctions due to the complexities involved in assigning accountability.
The potential accountability may fall on the product’s manufacturer if there are problems in the design or production process, the software creator for any coding issues, or the user for failing to adhere to instructions, neglecting updates, or disregarding safety measures during usage.
Grachev expressed that the novelty of the situation leaves him in need of learning more about it. He believes we should have the ability to control certain AI agents if necessary. However, from his perspective, since there seems to be no malicious intent behind its creation, no one can be held accountable for it because it is something entirely new and unprecedented, as stated to BeInCrypto.
According to him, it’s crucial to handle these scenarios delicately to ensure they don’t disrupt ongoing creativity.
Grachev stated, “Criticizing this entrepreneur might stifle innovation as others may become fearful. However, if the actions are problematic, they should be addressed. What’s important is finding a means to halt such behavior, learn from it, improve, and then continue learning.
The fine line, however, remains razor-thin, especially in more extreme scenarios.
Addressing Trust Issues for Responsible AI Adoption
One concern often raised about the future of artificial intelligence is the potential scenario where AI systems surpass human intelligence, a situation that could lead to unpredictable outcomes.
In Grachev’s words, he pointed out that there are numerous films exploring this topic. When discussing themes like law enforcement, government oversight, or military conflicts, it’s not hard to understand why automation might be seen as a significant source of concern. The potential exists for automation to reach such extensive levels that it could potentially pose harm to humans.
Responding to the question about the possibility of such a situation arising, Grachev stated that theoretically, it’s plausible. However, he acknowledged his inability to predict or know exactly what might occur in the future.
On the contrary, instances such as these serve as a symbol of the underlying trust challenges between people and artificial intelligence. Grachev proposes that the most effective strategy for addressing this issue is by presenting humans with scenarios where AI can indeed prove beneficial.
AI may seem unbelievable to many people. To help build trust, it’s best to start with simple tasks that demonstrate its capabilities. For instance, if you’re discussing cryptocurrency, instead of just explaining that an AI agent is reliable, try demonstrating its usefulness by sending a voice message through the agent instructing it to perform certain actions, like launching a meme on Pump.fun.
